18 Hot Headboards - For Every Budget and Style!

Scandinavians are known for their love of minimalism - and nowhere is more important than in the bedroom where the clean and decluttered aesthetic helps to creates an oasis of calm. Over the years, headboards have taken a distinct backseat - and in many cases banished altogether. But I've been noticing a welcomed change. Not only are headboards making a come back, they're taking centre stage! Think high, low, or super wide headboards in leather, linen, velvet, rattan, cane and wood. Go vintage or contemporary - or get crafting and make your own. There's something out there for every taste and budget. Here are 18 looks I love right now:

Leather

1. DIY cotton and leather hanging headboard: if you want to keep the bed you have but looking for a quick headboard fix, this DIY idea by Paulsvera with leather straps and two standard pillows could be the perfect solution - plus it's easy to clean and looks super comfy! 

2. Hung up on leather: Another hanging solution, this headboard from Citizenry goes all out leather. Love the cognac finish! 

Velvet

3. The cushion hack: In this Brooklyn apartment, the owner has attached a simple cushion from Urban Outfitters to the wall for a makeshift headboard. I love the moss tone - and it looks kinda cosy too, don't you think? 

4. The wrap around velvet: Once we've got over the beautiful colours (how fabulous is the combination of olive green, millennial pink and a touch of gold?) zoom in and imagine reclining against this velvet beauty. There's even a ledge to rest your head.  

5. The scallop: still on the pink - but with a different form and kind of relaxed. There's a similar headboard to this one currently available at Walmart! Oh, how I wish I lived in America right now. Loving this look, how about you? 

Linen

6. Freestanding linen: I bet you knew it was only a matter of time before linen appeared in this line-up - and this Ghost bed in the home of the owner of Artilleriet is an absolute beauty! You might just want to check out the full tour of this beautiful Gothenburg home too. Just saying. 

7. Simply Linen: If the Ghost linen bed featured in no.6 is a little over budget (*eyes water*) - a simple standalone linen headboard like this one in the home of Elin Kickén might be more your thing. I love the ones handmade by Fabricat.se. 

Wool

8. Quilted wool: A classic headboard that is super comfy and will never go out of style. This one's the Malö bed by luxury swedish bed manufactured Carpe Diem Beds - timeless and cosy! 

Cane

9. Rounded cane: If Finnish interior stylist Susanna Vento has chosen this cane headboard from Matri by Fennobed for her home, we should probably take note. 

10. Classic cane: keep an eye out for a classic cane headboard like this one at flea markets and second hand shops. It's the kind of piece you'll never tire of (Etsy* have a few great ones). 

11. Romantic cane: I'm all for adding a little romance to the bedroom - and this pretty antique cane headboard is as pretty as can be. Keep an eye out for headboards with old school glamour like this at antique fairs. 

12. DIY cane: yes, still on the cane, sorry! But I couldn't quite drop the style before I linked to this wonderful Ikea hack made using an Ivar unit and a sheet of cane. Follow September Edit's guide and you could have a new headboard in hours! 

Wood

13. White wood: probably the most standard headboard / bed frame in the mix - but I do love how a simple white bed can form the basis for any look. Dress in earthy linens and other textured, natural materials for a cosy look that still feels fresh. 

14. Contemporary light wood: a headboard that extends the width of the bedroom. Why not? Plus, wood allows you to add electrical outlets. To achieve a similar look either nip to your local DIY store for supplies and get crafting (she says.... having not touched a saw since school!) - OR ask a local carpenter to cut wood to size. This would look great in a kid's room too, don't you think?

15. The statement headboard: Now, this is fabulous. Yes, the room happens to have beautiful bones (massively high ceilings, concrete floor...) - but there's nothing to stop us from making full use of the height of a space - and these wood slats are the business! 

16. The add-on headboard: Remember this home? Sarah Shabacon created a birch headboard using a series of Mandal headboards from IKEA - so simple, yet so clever! 

Rattan

17. Simple rattan: palm headboards are everywhere right now - and there's a style to fit every boho heart! This one from Tiretta Living in the home of Studio Elwa is simple, yet still decorative and looks pretty against a soft peach wall. Side note: don't miss the full tour of Elin's home here!

18. Decorative rattan: or you could go a little more decorative and opt for a curved rattan headboard like this one from Silka Design.

10 Ways To Add Instant Warmth To Your Home

It seems having a cat is fast becoming a key criterion to appearing on My Scandinavian Home (or at least, that's how it feels right now!!). Maybe it's subliminal (I'd love a cat, as you know!) or maybe it's just that cats seem to add instant warmth a space. Fortunately for those without a feline friend there are plenty of other ways we can create a super mysigt (cosy) home. Take a peek at the lovely home of Josy Chen as an example. Josy lives in Ahaus, Germany with her boyfriend Timo and eight-year-old daughter Nele (OK, yes, she also has a cat named Cookie, but that's by the by - or, is it?!). Laid out over two floors, the apartment has a relaxed, contemporary bohemian vibe which makes you want to crawl through the pictures and chill out with a cup of tea. If you feel your home is lacking a little warmth right now, here are ten instant ideas to steal! 

1. Go eclectic: mix and match style and materials. Josy's home works because she keeps to a brownish colour scheme.

2. Go comfy: Swap out a dining chair for a sofa or nook  - so that the kitchen table becomes somewhere you could sit for hours!

3. Rattan: the modern boho look owes itself partly to the 1970's revival. If you lived through the 70's you might completely balk at the idea of rattan - just like I do over hair scrunchies from the 80's (scrunchies are a thing in Sweden right now and my daughters love them! The only saving grace is that they've stopped stealing all my hairbands). Fortunately, rattan has been given a cool and contemporary update and adds a relaxed feel to any space (whether you're on a high or low budget!).

4. 3D wall decor: Shake up your walls by adding mobiles (this one was made by Jose and Timo), wooden sculptures, mirrors and wall hangings. They'll add interest and depth to the room and help create a homely atmosphere.

5. Plants on all levels: nothing says modern boho like an urban jungle, right?! Think about dotting plants throughout your home using plant stands, windowsills, baskets and hanging planters. Anything goes, you just need to keep them alive!

6. Pile up the cushions: as you know I've been banned from buying anymore cushions / pillows (unofficially the collection is still growing, of course!). Why? Because cushions are a perfect way to add to the relaxed feel of a space. Mix and match earthy colours, texture and pattern.

7. Art: trawl local galleries and online shops to give your home a unique and personal artistic touch (I've promised myself this is the year I start to invest in oil paintings, illustrations and sculptures by local artists). If you're looking for wonderful ways to display art - try the Danish home archive, they are masters! 

8. Vintage finds - a vintage piece like a rattan chair (there's a beautiful vintage one* available here right now!) adds instant warmth and personality to a space.

9. Wood: nature nourishes the mind - bringing natural materials with a beautiful patina like wood indoors gives a living space soul. 

10. Kilim rugs - seek out patterned rugs with warm earthy tones - the more worn the better! 

So, if you're feeling your home is currently 'too cold' and you're missing that je ne sais quoi - the chances are could just add even one of these elements and it will make a difference!

A Lovely Swedish Apartment Inspired by Imperfection

I've noticed there are two camps when it comes to rattan  - those who lived with it in the 70's seem to be less keen and those who are discovering it for the first time love it - is this fair?! Having said that, in my childhood home we had a vast peacock chair - and it evokes great memories (so much so that I have had a similar one in my own home for years!). It's also meant that I was pretty quick to jump on rattan's big comeback.  And my guess is that even if you fall into the aforementioned first camp, you can't help but fall in love with the beautiful home of Swedish photographer Anna Malmberg, her fiancé Joncha and their six year old son Sonny Lou. Located in Stockholm, there's a common theme throughout Anna's home and work: her love for imperfection.  She embraces this with items made from natural materials that age gracefully with time including rattan chairs, weaved baskets, wooden chests, and handwoven fabric - many of which have been picked up on her travels. This is also demonstrated in her book 'Feelings of Imperfection'.

Anna is passionate about interiors, travel and music - and all three come together in her home which is documented on her inspiring blog, hosted with the Northern Sisters Collective (even you haven't discovered this yet hop over immediately!).

This storage unit is so pretty - and practical too! I love the use of different baskets for smaller items like scarves, etc. It would look lovely in a hallway!

Anna recently re-designed Sonny Lou's room. Like the rest of the home it's dominated by natural items (Joncha made the bed) which are so pretty against the pale blue wall (try Farrow & Ball's Light Blue). The little house cushions are from Camomile London (also seen in Olivia's bedroom) and the bedding is from Midnatt (loving the pink and brown combination, how about you?!).

Sonny Lou's cute ensemble is from Tiny Cottons (the top) and Oeuf (the dungarees). There's currently a selection of vintage mini peacock rattan chairs like the one seen in the window available here*.

Anna's creativity runs in the family - the sculptures below were made by her Mother and sister, and her Father is also an artist.

My Latest Bedroom Update (+ Get The Look!)

As you know, the top floor of our townhouse is one big room which we use as our bedroom and home office. Open plan is wonderful - it creates an airy, light-filled space. But at the same time I've learned it can also present challenges - like less privacy, the need to carve out zones and create cosiness. But I think I've finally found the solution: a rattan room divider from Danish brand Nordal. It makes a PERFECT screen - and I think it's so pretty too! While placing my order, I couldn't resist throwing a few other pieces into my cart (as you do!). And now I can lie in bed without looking at my huge pile of 'things to do' on my desk and wake up to fresh blooms instead. Phew! Here's a glimpse of my latest bedroom update. 

I love the imperfection in the rattan - my entire bedroom felt instantly more relaxed when I added it. It was like it had always been there. Don't you love it when that happens?

The stool is made from solid teak and I love the irregular shape. I picked up the vase years ago in a flower shop (you've probably spotted it in other parts of my home before).

I'm still so happy with the wall colour (Blushing Peach)  - can you hear Per breath a sigh of relief?! FYI: our floor colour looks white but it's actually Strong White by Farrow & Ball which is a very pale grey. You can find out more about the armchair and linen bed cover here.

A while back I remember a reading a birthday card that said 'Dot went out to the shops to buy a chocolate bar and found a dress to match' - and that was completely the the case with this amber vase. I felt it went so nicely with the 70s vibe of the rattan screen, and it adds something sculptural to our windowsill too! So pleased with it!
