An Old Tack Room, Reimagined for a Cosy Stay

I once heard that winter is meant to be a quiet reset — a season to lean into tiredness, keep warm, and stay cosy at home rather than fighting it. Never one to sit still, I was forced into this mindset yesterday evening when a snowstorm in Malmö meant I had to cancel padel.

Fun fact: in Sweden, part of your driving licence involves something called the “moose test” — basically proving you can handle a car in bad conditions, either on ice in winter or oil in summer (I think it involves slaloming around bollards without panicking). London doesn’t have anything like that, so Per understandably gets nervous when I’m out driving in snow and wind.

That said… an evening at home with a glass of red, and my newly arrived copy of Vogue Scandinavia doesn’t sound too tragic. Anyway — I digress. You’re not here for my winter ramblings. You’re here for the home tour. And luckily, I have a lovely one, just for you!

This cosy little home for two in Suffolk, England feels like the ultimate escape. Tucked away on a quiet family estate, The Old Tack Room is compact, calm, and very cosy. The interior was created in collaboration with Design & That, and features soothing tones, beautiful textures, and an easy, open-plan layout made for slow mornings and long evenings. by the fire.

And then there’s the estate itself. A stay might include yoga classes… or private dining… or beauty treatments… or horse riding… or watersports. Or — and let’s be honest, my favourite option — tiramisu and a glass of red by the fire (and maybe a cuddle with a llama!). Which would you choose?

Either way, it's the perfect escape for the weekend!

Lovely!

Once again, we're witnessing the warmth of veering away from sheet white walls and opting for warm, muted tones instead - sometimes so subtle, you might not notice.

Recently, while working on an interior design project here in Malmö, we opted to paint the white walls a soft off white and the result was instant. It felt warmer, welcoming and a little more luxurious.

What colours do you have on your walls?

I also really love the traditional wood panelling, it works wonders here.  Oh, and the kitchen is beautiful too!

If you're curious about a stay - check out the Old Tack Room for more info.

And for more cosy stays to dream about (or book!), I love:

I am not sure if you noticed but I got my days muddled up this week. I had promised to post Tuesdays and Thursdays this year - but now I realise that it might need to be a little more flexible depending on what I am up to - so Monday or Tuesday, Thursday or Friday. I do hope that works fine from your side?

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend,

Niki

PS I am so looking forward to finding a quiet moment this weekend, pouring a coffee and reading through / replying to your comments, it's something I so enjoy!

  1. Hello Niki, what a lovely escape for the weekend...I love colour on our walls, and all walls in our home have a different colour: light green in the living room and dining area, rosé in the hallway, beige for sleeping, petrol in the bathroom, etc. I like how the colours calm my eyes and how the lighten up my spirit....and Mondays or Tuesdays, I don't care, I am thankful for your posts either way. Haven a nice, cosy weekend in Malmö, greetings from Bremen, Steffi

  2. Ahh. I feel relaxed just looking at this. I have always veered towards slightly warm wall colors. Our living room is a very, very soft shade of yellow--many people don't realize there is a yellow tint to it, as it reads white in the daylight. It's a north-facing room and Michigan winters are typically lacking in sunshine, so I wanted something that would subtly warm and lighten the space. My daughter's room is the same color, and we've used a white shade in the rest of the house which is right on the border of grey/beige.

Enough about that! This little cottage is perfect for two. The transistor radio brings back memories of my growing-up years. I think I'd spend my spare time hanging out with the llamas!

    1. I love the idea of using a very light yellow tint. My mother-in-law has a subtle shade of yellow in her summer cottage living room and it always feels lovely and warm. It's an especially clever idea for a North-facing room.

    1. The llamas are great!! So fun! Maybe they wander into the cottage from time to time - so fun if so - although, you wouldn't want them eating your dessert!

  4. I love white--so many shades. We even use antique white--a vanilla undertone. I find it restful & cannot abide rooms painted in bright colors on different walls. I need white & feel peaceful under its' spell. Outside I am into green (esp. silver green)---nature's medicine. I especially like white in combination with a pop of red, green or cognac.

    1. I totally agree with you. It's essential for me to feel calm at home and I feel subtle shades of white and neutrals really help. It sounds like you have the perfect recipe at home with the pops of red, green and cognac against the different shades of white.

    1. We have a lot of off-white in our home, and I find it so calming and easy to live with. It's timeless.

  6. Enjoy your 'digressions'☺ Any day is just fine.
Design & That do well with neutrals, a bit strict for me but exquisite.
The Old Tack is more Nordic. Love the wood paneling, wooden countertops and simple wooden furniture. Even a little cast iron (shelf brackets) seem to lend character to the kitchen. The private backyard caught my eye. Nothing like having a cup of coffee in the morning, some fresh air and being outdoors without being noticed.
Bamboo frame for the bath mirror, clay pot tooth brush holder in the sink...aha...that gave me an idea☺ Thoughtful to place a mirror near the sky window. Tiles in the bathroom are beautiful.
Would spend time with the animals- sheep, llamas and horses.
To me, the home would reflect the inner self at that time. Seasons and scenarios bring out different moods and décor. However, the staples are white or light or neutral colored walls, wooden floors, and greenery. We get very little daylight a few months. Happy weekend☺

  11. I am not really into golden tones, browns or ochre, but there were still things about this home that I loved....it appeared to be very warm and cozy. My home is painted in a pale linen color, off white everywhere and the farmhouse is Chantilly Lace by Benjamin Moore everywhere. I may get brave and do a little wallpaper over there eventually. The home I grew up in was kind of a hodge podge of different wall colors and old unattractive wallpaper. I think that is why I gravitate towards a nice clean wall so that furniture and artwork can take center stage. I thought the tile work behind the bathroom sink in the Suffolk home was very interesting- maybe my favorite feature in this home. And of course I adored the little llamas!! I think adult llamas like to spit when disturbed as do their relatives the camels. Maybe the baby ones don't do that?? They look so sweet but perhaps in real life are not as sweet as they look unless you are well aquainted!!!! I enjoyed visiting this home even if not my favorite. I always find things that I like and enjoy seeing how objects are arranged on walls, shelves, etc. I love your posts and appreciate your sending them out into the world! I read a book to my granddaughter this week entitled "Share Some Kindness, Bring Some Light" and that is what you are doing. We need more of that in the world today. Thank you! : > )

I actually didn't know that llamas spit? How could they when they look so cute? Maybe best enjoyed from afar!!
What a lovely message 'share some kindness, bring some light' - so important in the world right now. Thank you so much for associating this with My Scandinavian Home, it really means a lot.

  12. A lovely get away. I love the colors too, although I would want a bit of art on the walls. The tiles are beautiful. I could relax here, especially with the llamas amd wine by the fire. We painted our house, all open except for the bedrooms, a white what looks almost pale, pale blue. Have a great weekend Niki. I so look forward to your blog every week.

  13. Lovely! Sometimes too much white comes across as sterile. That’s why I use it for places that I want to appear very clean. Bathrooms, ceilings and trim. For walls, I want warmth but airiness, so colours that breathe. Natural linen is a faithful, old, friend that I’ve used over and over again in many different homes. This rental seems to just like that. So it’s a place I would feel at home. The tongue and groove panelling adds to the feel. I can imagine feeling the comfort and I would want to stay for a long time.
