Japandi: The Fusion between Scandinavian and Japanese Design

2017 was the year for Japandi style: The mixture between Japanese and Scandinavian design. Though both styles share some philosophies–and part from minimalism–Japandi interiors are clean but warm and filled with the earthy elements of the Japanese culture. I’m talking about natural fibers like bamboo, rattan, paper, light woods and low furniture.

The walls also welcome a nice and inconspicuous change from cold whites to off-creamy whites, like wevet and satin... and how can I forget about wallpaper? Yes, making a comeback in the biggest way: bamboo wallpaper, anyone?

To me, this style has the best of both worlds. It makes Scandinavian design seem (unbelievably) more relaxed, while the Scandinavian philosophy adds in warmth.

The proof is always in the pudding–and in this case in the photos above via Denise Braki - Styling by: Jonathan Fleming

A beautiful, Small Swedish Home in Neutrals

Hej kompisar! Who says small can't be beautiful? This 1920's 27 metre square (290 foot square) studio apartment in Gothenburg, Sweden is a fine example of how to create a wonderful, cohesive pad with comfy zones to cook, sleep, slouch, and eat.  Think stonewashed linens, jute rugs, rattan furniture and open and closed storage for a relaxed look and feel. Such a perfect little oasis for one,  high up in the roof tops of Sweden's second largest city...

Photography - Anders Bergstedt Styling - Anna Furbacken for Entrance.

I love the feel of this space. I think the neutral colour scheme works so well - and I like how the windowsill runs all the way along to form a handy shelf for books etc.

Is there anything that stands out to you?

Get the look:  bed - relaxed linen bed skirt, I love this French linen bed set. dining area - linen table cloth, wooden stools. living room area - Stockholm 2017 bench, Skultuna candle holder, jute rug Kitchen - Smeg fridge, beautiful rough linen by the metre for curtains.

There's a whole load more inspiring small spaces to be found here (if this comes up first just scroll passed).

Before we all head off  - if you have a moment please take a peek a this film by UNICEF featuring an unexpected visit to a furniture store with the a powerful and important message.

Have a lovely day!

PS - how fun is this video tour of Robert Downey JR's house? I was super excited to spot the Ticka project - a beeeeautiful multi-functional piece created by the extremely talented duo Grefmar + Hederström, here in Malmö, Sweden! Yay!

Josi's Relaxed & Super Charming Berlin home

Hola que tal?! I'm on a mini break with my family in Spain right now soaking up a little half-term sunshine (the light, oh the light!). Although, this morning my mind is a few thousand kilometres away in Western Europe in this gem of an apartment in Berlin Mitte. And it's one beautiful home. Enjoyed by Josi (if you haven't discovered her on instagram hurry over now!) and her boyfriend Philipp, who are expecting their first child (how cute is that crib?! Find a similar ones here) and their two rabbits Püppi and Anton. The space is flooded with warm pools of light, which dance off a beautiful original parquet floor, mid-century and rattan finds against a backdrop of striking textures and deep hues. Possible one of my favourite apartments to date - I feel instantly warm and fuzzy just looking at it, how about you?!

Photography / Design: Josi / @jose_phiiiine

There are so many elements I love about this home. But that hallway is probably the most inspiring of all! Imagine being greeted by this view each day when you arrive home?

Is there anything that stands out to you?

Get the look from Josi's home: hallway - Lyra rattan sofa (LOVE this!), light from Monoqui. Dining room - Starkey chandelier. bedroom - Java pendant light, print above bed from Desenio, source a similar crib here, Penn dressing table with mirror.

If you'd like to see more of Josi's home and find out where other items are from - nip on over to her Instagram feed here.

And for a few other lovely Berlin apartments (of which there are many - that city is so hot on relaxed, boho style, have you been? if not you must!) - check out this magnificent, bohemian pad, a mid-century inspired home and a fantastic Berlin home. Inspiring!

Have a lovely day!

PS Edition London & Country Living magazine shared an excerpt from The Scandinavian Home - and it features one of my favourite Danish homes ever (we had such a memorable day shooting it too!) - read all about it and take a tour here!

Bright and Beautiful Scandinavian Apartment

Hi, hope you're having a wonderful Monday so far! It’s Ana here again. Niki is enjoying some well-deserved holidays in beautiful Spain for the next couple of weeks–so you will see me pop in once in a while to share some content I’m sure you’ll love...

Like this gem of an apartment, located in (you guessed it!) Stockholm. This 57sqm wonder is a display of light and well-thought-out design. From top to bottom, from room to room, this home is clearly a project of love. Don't you think? I'm particularly drawn to the openness of this home, the pops of green from the plants, the clever use of space, rustic floors and intricate pieces of art on the walls-specially that gallery above the sofa.

The tall ceilings and characteristic white-crisp walls, make this my dream Scandinavian experience. I can almost picture myself, on that stunning balcony, enjoying a bright Summer evening. *sigh*

I can’t wait to read what you think about this home... BUT before I let you go, don’t forget to vote for Niki and My Scandinavian Home in the Domino design blog awards (voting closes October 31st and you can vote once a day). Thank you!

A Striking Mid-Century Inspired Danish Home

Wow - I can't believe it's actually the end of the week. It's been getting darker by the day in Sweden which makes it almost impossible to get out of bed (and we're bad at the best of times - guh!). When I was doing research for my Lagom book (see also the US and French version), I discovered only 10% of us are natural early risers - are you one of them? If not I feel your pain - at least we have two days of lie-ins ahead - yasss! Anyway. On with today's tour. And I've got the most lovely, relaxed, Danish home to share with you. Birgit (also known as Fraubitte) has an expert eye at discovering all things mid-century and retro. Her home is full of treasures, set against a  striking backdrop of black and blue-green accents. Birgit loves to share snapshots of her home on her delightful instagram feed which is also peppered with pictures  of the Danish landscape, travel, design and art. Let's take a peek inside Birgit's world!

Photography credits: @Fraubitte

I love all her mid-century Danish furniture so much -  just how striking does the teak look against the back wall?!

I also think the colours in the bedroom make a pretty combination.

Is there anything that you're loving about this space?

If you're looking to achieve a smiliar look, I find Etsy a great place source for mid-century furniture including dining chairs, credenzas and mirrors (I've had my eye on an asymmetric mirror ever since I saw one in this Danish home - aren't they lovely?)

If you fancy getting a little more Danish inspiration this weekend check-out this archive... one of my favourites...

Have a great weekend and see you Monday!

PS Don't forget to vote for My Scandinavian Home in the Domino Design Blog Awards (category 'Best International Design Blogs') if you have the time - it would make my day!

Embracing the grey, Swedish style

When it starts to get cold and grey outside sometimes the only way is to embrace it. Like in this Swedish home! For some it might be missing that dash of colour - for others it's an oasis of calm and serenity. Either way, there's definitely a little inspiration in here for all (a triple row of pillows might be a good place to start -  just how much do you want to sink into that bed right now?!). Put up your feet, take a fika and enjoy the tour!

Beautiful photography by Anders Bergstedt for Entrance

So calm! I'm liking the hooks and round mirror (they're everywhere right now) in the bedroom - so simple to replicate - and yet lovely too!  I there anything that stands out to you?

Get the look: sitting room - Jetson armchair, Tati sofa table, bestlite wall sconce, the black and white spotted and stonewashed white linen cushions are similar, source similar prints at The Poster Club (would love to know who the swimmer is by - any tips?!). dining - wishbone chair. bedroom - round mirror, wooden hook rack, white bestlite wall sconce.

See more Scandinavian homes in shades of grey here - or for lovers of bolds and brights - you'll love this colourful home archive!

Super excited to receive the French version of my Lagom book in the post yesterday - eeeeee! It's available for pre-orders here and will launch on 2nd November, 2017! Merci beaucoup!

Have a lovely day!

PS I hope you don't mind a mini reminder to vote for My Scandinavian Home in the Domino Design Blogs Awards (category 'Best International Design Blogs' - I'd be so happy if you do :)
