A delightful Swedish home with dark wood features

Hello Friday, how great to see you! I realised the other day that we've been living in our house in southern sweden for over 8 years! When we first moved in one side of the interior was covered in dark wood walls and all the doors were made from the same material. Bit by bit we painted over the wood and it made a huge difference to the light. Some wood features still remain though and I like the mid-century vibe it brings to the look. This home in Gothenburg, Sweden bears the same subtle wood touches and is complimented by beautiful soft shades of grey, mid-century furniture and touches of brass. Loving the plants throughout too.

What do you think? Is this your kind of style?

A few items I know and love: Aquarelle canvas wall hangingEktorp sofa with a relaxed linen cover (try Bemz). Hay strap mirror. I love this pair of mid-century brass floor lamps. Hay polygon quilt. Source a similar gold picture frame here.

More inspiration for decorating with wood in the archive here (scroll passed the first one).

My Scandinavian Home is celebrating four years this week (can you believe it?!). To thank you all for your wonderful support I've organised a present for you. But you'll have to wait until tomorrow to see what it is... oh the suspense!

I'm also holding a give-away all weekend on instagram to win a beautiful elskling key pouch from A.Andreassen Design - a new online store selling scandinavian heritage slippers and key pouches - enter here

In the meantime, here are the five most popular posts of all time on My Scandinavian Home:

A small space with a big personality

I spotted this Gothenburg apartment over at Stadshem this morning and I thought - ooooo. It's perhaps not everyone's cup of tea but there's something about the black leather sofa, plants and cool art and mid-century mix that I love (as you know I'm a big fan of Scandinavian mid-century in my own home). It's also sightly off beat - the rug is askew, they have used a reclaimed stool as a coffee table and simply piled books on the floor for a more relaxed feel. It's hard to believe that it's a one room flat too!

What do you like most about this space?

It's not an easy look to replicate since many of the items are one off finds. However, second hand black leather sofas are often coming up on Lauritz or LiveAuctioneers and you can search for portrait paintings on Etsy.

If you're in or near Malmö there are some great places to pick up mid-century pieces - once a month Nirvana opens it's doors, and they also have an online shop. If you get lucky you can also pick up cool pieces at Sopstationen (this is my ruse to get you to Malmö! I hope it's working?!).

I hope you have a fab Thursday!

A charming Swedish home in white, wood and ochre

Sometimes the most simple schemes can be the most beautiful. Like in this space. A relatively titchy (44 m2 / 473 f2) Swedish apartment where white walls, wood furnishings, and ochre accessories come together to create a lovely, warm and cosy home. I particularly love the mid-century touches (seen in the kitchen and sitting room) and the shelf with hooks in the bedroom. So charming and full of lovely ideas, don't you think?

Such a lovely, cosy home!

Is there anything that stands out to you?

Get the look: kitchen - source mid-century dining chairs here, this glass teapot is similar. Sitting room - this is a great place to pick up a mid-century credenza, the poster is by Berit Mogensen Lopez available here.

Yesterday was a completely crazy day, thank you so much for all your warm wishes and congratulations on my new book both here, on Instagram and Facebook it meant so much to me! I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it! Unfortunately I haven't got time to relax and dwell on the good feeling this morning as I'm waiting for the imminent arrival of a crew from the German International TV channel DW-TV who would like to interview me for a documentary - exciting! More info soon, I promise!

In the meantime, today is the last day to receive 20% off a wonderful signed, limited edition print by Ruvan Wijesooriya from Absolut Art! Simply use the code MSH20 at checkout to redeem the discount. I've got my eye on Girl and Window....

Have a lovely day!

Order and poetry in the Stockholm home of a creative

Hello! It's a public holiday here in Sweden tomorrow so we're gearing up for a few days at the cottage - which I'm soooo looking forward to! But I'd never leave you without a beautiful home tour and a round up of a few links I love of course! This home in Hornstull, Stockholm really stood out to me for it's vibrant colours (the greens, the yellows....the orange!) and relaxed, lived-in vibe. The lovely space belongs to interior architect and designer Marie Dreiman and her husband and centres around  their philosophy of 'order and poetry'.  I certainly see that from these pictures, how about you?

I love the sunny yellow cabinet - it's so cheerful! And the green in the kitchen is beautiful too. Is there anything that stands out to you?

Get the look: kitchen / dining - There are some really fab 1950's dining chairs here (including this blue formica one).  Tolix style bar stool in yellow. Sitting room: Corona chair by E Jörgensen and sofa by IKEA, rattan chair, pick up a teak mid-century chair here. I love this and this vintage filing cabinet. Bedroom: the Hay polygon quilt cover is similar, source a mid-century bedside table here, Le Klint pendant lamp.

Other relaxed homes I love include this mid-century inspired home in Berlin, a light filled Swedish family home and a cottage in the Australian countryside (in case you missed them).

I thought I'd leave you with a few links I love this week too:

Dining with lighting and plants overhead.... and the easiest indoor plants to grow (and keep alive) indoors.

A great way to store LP's.

Possibly the cutest children's clothing I've seen this season.

Love the mix in this kitchen!

Where I'd like to be sitting right now. Want to join me? We could dangle our feet with a champagne cocktail? Say yes!

Which reminds me, have you ever seen Isaac's live lip-dub marriage proposal? If not, you must!! It's so wonderful!

And finally - the 22 most beautiful places in the world - do you agree?

Right, that's it from me. Better go and pack! Eeeee!

Have a wonderful few days and see you Monday....

PS Oh and calling all Stockholmers - Photographer Petra Reger (who's fabulous home in a former factory I featured here)  is looking for a lovely home story in Stockholm to photograph early next week. If you have any tips Petra would love to hear from you.

Vintage and mid-century drinks trolleys for a refreshing Valentine's Day!

Hellooo! And happy Valentine's day ♥♥♥ Any romantic plans? Me, I was thinking of enjoying a refreshing glass or two with my man. Which got me thinking. There's been so much inspiration lately on beautiful vintage drinks trolleys. We were given a fab mid-century drinks trolley ♥♥♥ by my parents-in-law a few year's ago and I finally got around to photographing it. Sadly it doesn't carry any cocktail hour specials!

A quick guide to wear things are from....the chrome Dreyfuss 500 phone is from Graham and Green. The plant is a Corokia Silver Ghost which I once wrote a post about here. I bought the pot and plant from Gouteva in Malmö. My stack of magazines are all past editions of Elle Decoration UK. The cushions in the chair are from Designer's Guild and the black and white throw is called VILMIE RUND from IKEA. Sometimes mid-century drinks trolley's pop up at Lauritz. You're so welcome to pin these pics.

And for those of you who prefer your happy hour drink closer to hand, how about some of these lovely vintage mini bars?!

Subtle Nuances in a Beautiful Mid-Century Inspired Home

Why hello there! Everything's been so rushed today - and then I discovered the home of historian Tara Mayer in the moutains in North Vancouver, and everything came to a grinding halt. As pared-back spaces go, this one is breathtaking! If you love incredible architecture, rich textures (light wood, concrete, marble, wool...), neutral nuances, mid-century furniture and worldly art pieces, you're in for a real treat! Relax, put your feet up and enjoy!

Concrete floors add a surprising amont of texture to a space, even so, a fluffy, cosy rug like this beni ourain (this one* is similar) is a must!

Be still my beating heart! Just how beautiful is this marble kitchen sink?! I love the wooden worktop too (do you think it slides?).

I am currently collecting handmade ceramics for my own kitchen - but seeing Tara's it looks like I've got a long way to go! They look so pretty as a complete collection, don't you think?

I love how Tara has used simple oyster and cream sheepskins to cushion the mid-century furniture - they add just the right amount of softness to the space.

Get the look

1. Carl Hansen & Son CH25 Easy chair
2. Custom made Beni Ourain rug
3. Nambé Kyoto Tea Pot*
4. Notary ceramics

Isn't this space beautiful?! I hope you enjoyed the tour as much as I did.

If you'd like to read a full interview and see more pics - check-out this feature over at Jenni Kayne.

Have a lovely evening!

Niki
