Inside Kristina's Light & Airy Copenhagen Home with Statement Lighting

There’s nothing quite like a sunny Friday in Sweden—two reasons to celebrate! Just across the bridge in Copenhagen, I can picture the city buzzing with life as locals spill onto the pavements, gathering in restaurants, cafés, and bars to make the most of the warm spring sunshine we’ve been waiting for.

Kristina Yndgaard and her young family live in Frederiksberg, one of my favourite neighbourhoods in the Danish capital. Kristina’s style is effortlessly pared-back, with soothing earthy tones that, combined with a pale wood floor, create a fresh, airy feel. Her ‘less is more’ approach means every piece she’s chosen stands out, not just for its function but for its beautiful form and design.

As you take in her home, keep an eye out for four very cool lights—each making a statement in its own way. From a sculptural overhead lamp to a perfectly placed table lamp, Kristina’s choices prove just how much lighting can elevate a space. And don’t miss the charming little basket hanging from a door handle or the smart sofa tray—ideal for your morning coffee!

Ready to feel inspired?

The incredible Flotation pendant light over the dining table is by Ingo Maurer and the dining table was a flea market find.

I have a real passion for lighting - and one of my favourites is the Snoopy Lamp - seen here. I love that Kristina has chosen the green version which really stands out and makes a statement. The rattan bar table is vintage.

I love this little wooden tray with a curved underside - it works perfectly for wider sofa arms! A green and white striped cushion adds a cool modern twist to the beige sofa and creates balance with the Snoopy lamp.

The Bestlite collection by Gubi is a Danish classic and extremely popular in Denmark. I am a really big fan! And just how cute is the cot (also known as the Boxspring Co-sleeper)?

Kristina is keen on sewing and has a small side business making everything from baby dummy straps and cushion covers to lamp shades and Christmas decorations out of pretty floral fabrics, evidence of which can be seen on the side of the cot. Check out her work here

I also think this Large Mushroom lamp is also very cute - especially in a children's bedroom!

I hope you enjoyed this little tour of Kristina’s light and airy home—it perfectly captures the mood of a sunny Friday in Copenhagen, don’t you think?

Did any details stand out to you? And what about the lamps? I love how they make such a statement! Lighting plays a huge role in setting the atmosphere in a home, and I’ve noticed a lot of chatter on Instagram lately about avoiding overhead lighting at all costs. Personally, I don’t agree.

I take my cues from the Scandinavians—they know how to create a warm, inviting atmosphere while still keeping things practical. From what I’ve learned, the key to great lighting is variety: a mix of low lighting, tabletop lamps, task lighting, and yes, even overhead lighting. That way, you have the right light for every mood and activity.

If you do have an overhead light, the best approach is to install a dimmer switch. That way, you can brighten the space when you need clear visibility and then soften it for those cosy, relaxed moments. Would you agree?

Right, that's it from me–I'm off to enjoy a little sunshine and soak up some very much needed Vitamin D! Tomorrow evening we're heading to the theatre to see the Roxette musical 'Joy Ride' - being a Swedish band, Roxette is extremely popular here, as you can imagine! Have you ever been a fan?

I hope you have some fun plans too!

See you Monday! Kram!

A Touch of Calm: Alisan’s Serene Copenhagen Home

Ready for a midweek breather? This pared-back Copenhagen apartment offers just the respite you might be looking for. Home to Alisan—a Londoner who moved to the Danish capital with her husband and their baby daughter two and a half years ago—this space exudes warmth and calm. I've had the pleasure of meeting Alisan a few times; she is as lovely inside as she is outwardly, and it’s no surprise her home reflects that same beauty.

Located in vibrant Vesterbro, the family’s two-bedroom rental comes with its own creative limitations, meaning they've had to embrace some inventive solutions, like command strips! Still, with its warm natural materials, curated lighting, and mix-and-match furnishings, this oasis feels so welcoming and tranquil in the heart of Copenhagen.

Here are some snapshots of Alisan's home, along with her reflections on creating this haven.

"Being an architect, I love classic, timeless design, so over the years  I've tried to build a collection of pieces I love - mainly in natural materials so they don't date as much. The goal is that they can easily fit anywhere in future homes."

"I love plants, they're a great way to add texture, colour and height to spaces, especially here as our ceilings are so high. We actually moved our cacti here with us from London and now they're huge!"

"I haven't shown much of our baby girl's room as her crib is in our bedroom. We have kept the room neutral and added fun pops of colour. We moved from London with this IKEA daybed and it's been used so much over the years. Firstly as a sofa, then a guest room bed, and now as a spare bed for sleepy parents doing shifts when needed!"

Isn’t it a lovely tour? I think it’s the simplicity of the decor that makes everything feel so naturally “in place.” Calm personified—just what I crave amidst my not-so-calm mind! And seeing her little baby girl brought me right back to when my own girls were small (they’re now 16 and 14—how does time fly by so fast?).

Did Alisan’s home resonate with you, too? Are there any details that caught your eye? If so, I’d love for you to share in the comments! And if you're curious about where any of the pieces are from, feel free to ask—I’ll do my best to help.

A Copenhagen Family Home Full of Inspiring Details

When you've been writing a blog Scandinavian interiors for over thirteen years, the same talented people are bound to pop up over and over again. Out of the 2968 posts I've published, the Copenhagen apartment of Freja Bak Josias (then Petersen) in 2019 still remains etched in my memory.

Trends have moved on a whole lot since 2019, but also Freja's too. In the five years that have gone by, Freja has completed her studies and now works as a 'Constructing Architect and Master in Building Culture', and has also moved into a new apartment with her partner and adorable daughter Ruth. And with that, a distinct new decorating style has emerged.

Freya's beautiful apartment is high up in the rooftops of Copenhagen - which lends itself to high sloped ceilings and old wood beams. But what really stands out to me is the use of colour - which includes door frames and skirting boards painted in pea green, vibrant art, a red ladder, and orange lamps. It's playful, yet calm and adds a touch that feels very 'now' while still feeling personal and relaxed.

Keep a look out for how high ledges have also been put in use for display purposes and also for the montage in Ruth's room - so pretty! Enjoy the tour!

What a lovely home - truly inspiring!

Is anyone else looking around their home and thinking 'maybe I should paint those door frames? I might need a little orange lamp for my home too - so cute!

What inspires you most about Freja's Danish home?

It's 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) here in Malmö today which is the hottest September day on record. I think a cooling dip in the sea is in order.

I hope you have a happy Wednesday!

Iconic Design, Art and Vintage Treasures in a Beautiful Danish Home

Warning: this incredible Danish home will make you want to get the paint brush out this weekend. Whether that's to paint the walls or a vintage find remains to be seen, but the subtle (and at times, bold) use of colour in interior stylist Eva-Marie Wilken's home sure is inspiring.

But it's not only the use of tones - the combination of pattern, art, sculpture, iconic design pieces and small accessories make her home truly unique - and while there's a lot going on, the calming tones and minimalist look ensures plenty of visual breathing space.

So, buckle up friends, and get ready for an inspirational joy ride!

I love how Eva-marie dares to be bold. This cobalt blue desk was a simple off-white colour when she first discovered it and has been turned into a statement piece with an unexpected splash of paint. See below for the 'before'.

These large openings from room to room are a common feature in Copenhagen turn-of-the-century buildings and allow the light to flow through the space. I love this glimpse into the sitting room where sculptures have been wall mounted beside art.

Notice the stainless-steel dining chairs (seen more clearly in the lead picture) - a big trend in the world of interiors right now.

Playful touches can be seen in many corners of Eva-marie's home giving the space a whimsical touch. Notice how she has played with shape - for example in the image above three round items have been grouped together to create balance.

Fortune favours the brave, as they say, and this recently painted yellow door makes a wonderful focal point in the kitchen.

Eva-marie's love for different mediums also shines in the pale pink master bedroom where art, sculpture and decorative lamps have been grouped together. Notice how she also uses 'negative space' (i.e. areas of the room left blank) to train the eye and create a sense of calm.

Dark brown and mustard hues work beautifully with the pink and create contrast.

There's something wonderfully decadent about the bathroom - and yet it also has an old school feel about it at the same time. It's fun to see the use of wallpaper! Note that while it looks like a wall-to-wall carpet in the image above, it's a stone floor, so no one need panic!

Wow, I so enjoyed this tour, it spoke to me in so many ways. I loved all the design elements (every item was unique and while it served a purpose it also added interest from a visual perspective).

I also loved the use of subtle tones and the art.

Is there anything that stood out to you about Eva-marie's wonderful Danish home?

Thank you so much for stopping by My Scandinavian Home today, I hope you have a wonderful weekend and leave feeling full of new ideas!
