As we settle back into city life, I thought we'd take a peek inside an apartment in the heart of Södermalm, Stockholm. While the setting is urban rather than rural, there's something about this home that feels equally relaxed and inviting. Perhaps it's the warm earthy palette, the well-used kitchen, or the way everything appears collected over time.
This Södermalm apartment has that lived-in look, thanks to the open shelving, wooden island worktop, aged cutting boards, visible cables and tactile textiles that bring warmth and character.
What I love most is the unpretentious approach. Open shelves lined with everyday glassware and pantry staples rather than carefully styled displays, and earthy shades of olive green, ochre and rust add depth throughout. Art, plants and vintage finds lend a personal touch to the rooms, creating a home that feels creative, practical and welcoming.

A rare peek into a bathroom on here! I was drawn to this one because although it is simple and unfussy, with exposed pipework, classic white tiles and straightforward fittings, it's a great example of how you can elevate a practical space without spending a fortune. A striking shower curtain, nice towels, artwork, baskets, a few hooks, a plant and a pretty robe all help to add personality and warmth.

ReplyDeleteI love looking at homes where I can imagine people actually living there. Are the shelves in the coat closet area actually tension rods grouped together? If so, that's a genius move. There are several space-saving ideas here--the mounted bedside tables and light sconces, the shelving throughout the apartment. I'm a firm believer that you can have an attractive home without a crazy budget, and this apartment is proof positive of that!

DeleteIt occurs to me that lack of pretension, combined with an artistic eye and love of natural materials, is what I find most appealing about the homes featured on MSH. So many creative approaches to homemaking that are designed to please the inhabitants, rather than to impress others. These are homes, not merely handsome houses or apartments (although they can be both of course.)

Good point about the home computers. Maybe they are like me and avoid including that area in photographs? And I love what you said about pleasing the inhabitants rather than impressing others. I think that's why I keep coming back to this blog--it feels more real to me than most interior decorating/design blogs.

ReplyDeleteLiked both Kris and the above comment. These are homes! The wooden open shelves, pigeonholes/boxes, mounted shelves, and stainless steel in the kitchen draw me to this home. And the reading nook. As comfortable as it is, I wouldn't mind a nice bed☺ Each space is as it should be, the dining with a large table/ seating, living with sofas and beautiful windows, the office.
