A Beautiful, Earthy Stockholm Home with Old World Charm

God morgon (good morning!), I'm stopping by today to share a wonderful apartment in Stockholm with you. Despite the usual architecture - high ceilings, wonderfully large windows etc, this one hits a little differently the others I have shown recently thanks to it's dark wood floor - which is unusual in a Scandinavian home!

The decor has a wonderful old-world charm about it - especially in the kitchen, where a dark wood floor combines with traditional style cabinets and plenty of wall hung pots and pans giving it a cosy feel.

Note the blue-grey theme throughout the home - seen on the cabinets, skirting boards, door frames and shelves - creating a beautiful, cohesive feel. A closer inspection will also reveal an old wardrobe transformed into bookshelves, a lovely gallery of photos that goes up and around a door as well as some pretty Kilim rugs which add a sense of warmth.

Let's take a look around.

Beautiful!

I was actually chatting to an interior design friend the other day about re-painting my house with some subtle new colours, and maybe also the door frames. She was enthusiastic but also told me to exercise a little caution: 'you can get tired of colour quite quickly'. For this reason, I'll need to choose VERY carefully and select colours that a) we love and b) aren't too 'in your face' - preferably earthy nature tones. And also, I'm thinking of painting just the areas that are easy to repaint - like walls! But we'll see.

What are your thoughts on this? Do you have a favourite accent colour in your home?

And is there anything about this charming home that stood out to you?

I'm looking forward to reading and responding to comments over a coffee this weekend - it's one of my favourite moments.

But before we all head off, would you like to see a couple of other Scandinavian city apartments ? Here are some from the archive to fall in love with all over again:

I hope you have enjoyed the tours this week. Have a fabulous couple of days!

See you Monday!

  2. I love that shade of blue! We are fixing up a 1918 farmhouse here in the states and it has very dark woodwork and floors. I felt we needed to keep them to honor the house. Seeing this apartment gives me ideas of what might look nice with that!! I picked the same shade of blue for old but not original kitchen cupboards!!

  3. I love the colors in the kitchen! Some of the artwork is a bit too edgy for me in a home; it calls too much attention to itself instead of the peaceful vibe of the rest of the home.
“Agreeable gray” is a neutral paint color that is popular in newer homes- it looks nice in contrast with white trim.

  4. That kitchen is my world! Beautiful rugs! I agree, earthy natural shades for me, blue-grey and sage green seem to stay well too, for me. Think it might also depend on the amount of light each room receives. See you, Monday! Thank you for these moments, precious to me:) Hope everyone has something fun to do this weekend!

  5. This is so beautifully done! I am a fan of the shade of blue used on the kitchen cabinets and love how they used it on other trim, too. Their use of color picked up from rugs, art, lamps, pillows etc. throughout the rooms gives a pleasing effect. The table in the kitchen is very handsome and looks as though it could also serve as another surface for food prep.

    1. Yes, I love the big table too - I noticed how they don't have an island so I agree, it definitely serves as somewhere for extra prep.
Thank you for pointing out the use of colour too.

  6. Lovely natural window light! We are painting our entire main floor and up the stairs to 2nd floor with a yellow based green called Anjou Pair! It’s a paint from Home Depot easily
available here in Canada! The light in our house is very polarized in that way I mean we have east morning light and west afternoon evening light I love your wider baseboards and doorframes too! I have 1980s oak cabinets that I can’t convince my husband to paint over! My friend is going to lighten her oak cabinets by bleaching them. It’s ok I can’t paint them as yet because I can still day dream about what colour I would use lol.We will replace our 45 year old vinyl in kitchen and bathroom with a natural linoleum product called Marmoleum! Our house is almost 40 years old next year and all of our wood trim inside is mahogany with a reddish stain. I love your beautiful posts, they inspire me greatly!

    1. Your home sounds wonderful! All that light! Have fun dreaming about those cabinets - where there's a will, there's a way, so it's good to be prepared and ready to go ;)

  7. If I lived there, I would have the urge to run and slide on the beautiful wooden floors. :)

I wish I could see the black chest better--it's in the background of a picture of the bedroom. It's so unique. And did I spy scarves wrapped around the leg of a desk? Is that a new trend?

    1. Yes, I agree - the recessed bookshelf is lovely. I wonder what was there before? Maybe a shallow cupboard?

    2. Probably a door they have blocked off. A common way to block off old doors, that is also easy to change back.
