A lovely Finnish kitchen with vintage finds

I was doing a little research for my second book (so exciting!) last night and stumbled across this beautiful country style kitchen in a house dating back to the 1800's in a peaceful, rural setting in Purmo, Österbotten Finland. The family, who run the shop Lundagård, aim to counterbalance today's growing consumption through recycling and living a greener way of life.  Christian and Aja Lund (the owners) designed the kitchen and built it with the help of a local carpenter.  The space has been furnished with a beautiful mix of antiques and vintage finds for a lovely, relaxed feel where family life lies at the centre.

Oh so lovely - whenever I see spaces like this I feel like swapping our modern house for an old one in the country  - one day?!

How about you?

Get the look: Lundagård sell a beautiful selection of 'old and new, handmade and antique' items. And I also find Etsy a great source for Swedish antiques and Finnish antiques.

You can see some lovely snapshots from life at Lundagård here.

I visited Finland for the first time last month and absolutely fell in love with the country. The people were so friendly, the design shops in Helsinki were wonderful and the countryside was simply stunning (I even spotted my first wild moose!).  One day I dream of going back and exploring the Ekenäs archipelago national park by boat. Imagine?!

Most likely I have been inspired by Finnish cabins featured here on MSH including this log cabin (which has now been transformed into this beautifully simple cabin) and this idyllic holiday home.  Ah, so lovely!

Finland anyone?!

  1. What a strange coincidence that you mention your second book today, Niki! Yesterday I happened to be on the Simon & Schuster website and came across mention of your second book... I had to do a double-take. I didn't recall you mentioning it before -- I even came back to your blog to see if I had somehow missed that post! The preview looked wonderful -- I've even pre-ordered already! now to be very, very patient :)

the home you posted today looks so laid back and cheery -- I'm always torn between a minimalist, calm vibe and this more eclectic, lived-in feel...seems like the only solution is to have two in the city and one in the countryside, don't you think? ;)

    1. What a coincidence! I'm still working on it but so excited about it, we've already photographed some beautiful homes. Thank you so much for pre-ordering it, how lovely of you! PS I think you're right about the two homes (although sometimes I think you need three - one in the city, one in the country and one by the sea?! Just to cover all styles, of course!).

    2. Haha, as I was writing my comment I just KNEW you'd include mention of a home by the sea....I'm afraid you're right...

best of luck on your book! oh to be a fly on the wall at the photoshoots...

  2. What a really nice kitchen indeed! I love the vintage vibe that comes out of it.
