My Spring Table With Danish Recycled Glassware

Collaboration*
Hej vänner! Everyone ready for the weekend? Before we shoot off, I'm really excited to share some recent pictures I took in my dining room in collaboration with Pernille Bülow. You'll likely recognise the name. I am a huge fan of Pernille Bülow - an atelier on the Danish island of Bornholm, and I am always excited to see their latest collections. And this one is really exceptional! Pernille Bülow prides itself on producing handmade items from glass and other raw materials in their workshop in the small village of Nexø. The new ReUse glassware consists of a drinking glass (in two different sizes), bowl, vase, oil lamp and jar, all of which have been individually mouth blown using waste glass from the pharmaceutical industry. And every single piece is unique. Read on for more!

I used this little bench in the kitchen for all the 'props' for the shoot, and they looked so pretty I couldn't resist taking some snapshots before the items even made it to the table!

When you experience the pieces from the ReUse Collection firsthand, it's hard to imagine that it's made from waste glass. Every year, Novo Nordisk has large amounts of excess borosilicate glass from their diabetes drug production, which is then disposed of. And now, Pernille Bülow has found a way to remelt the glass and shape it into beautiful objects. Look closely and you'll see small bubbles - a result of the production and a hallmark of the ReUse Collection.

The ReUse drinking glasses come in a small and large size. For the table, I used the smaller size because I felt they were a perfect fit with the bowls. People are often cautious about putting handmade glassware in the dishwasher but fear not - these are heat and dishwasher resistant!

The pretty ReUse jars with cork lid can be used for just about anything, anywhere in the home - but I have to say they do look lovely in the kitchen filled with oil and salt!

The ReUse vases all vary slightly in size (a sign of mouth blown design!) and look equally beautiful alone as they do on the table in a set of three. I used a single stem - which is all it needs!

For our spring table I combined the ReUse Collection with a white linen tablecloth, striped linen napkins, and simple ceramic plates - for a relaxed, yet formal rustic setting.

Let's hope the Brantmark table manners can live up to the setting (there's work to be done, I can tell you *rolls eyes*!). Having said that, there is a relaxed feel to the setting too - which gives way to chatting and laughter into the small hours - hygge style!).

I love antique silverware, how about you? It always reminds me of lunch at my Grandmother's house as a child.  There was something about the slightly tainted, unpolished appearance of this silverware which made it a perfect fit with the ReUse collection (at least that's my excuse for not polishing it! That obvious?).

The ReUse glass bowl is great for soup, cereal or just about anything really and it matches the drinking glasses perfectly.

My favourite item in the collection has to be the ReUse oil lamp.  I'm a big fan of oil lamps in general - they've been slowly replacing candles in my home since they're a bit Moore convenient! I particularly the simplicity of this one. It's also SUPER easy to refill and light (as an oil lamp expert, this isn't always the case!). I now have three of these beauties dotted around - because they work absolutely anywhere in the house - on a coffee table, windowsill (well away from the curtains of course), on my desk (in Sweden it's perfectly normal to have a lit candle on your desk on a dark day - something I've been quick to embrace!) - anywhere!

I showed this beauty to my sister Cas last night over a Zoom call, and she actually paused the call to buy one! Let's hope those mouth blowers can work quickly, I have a feeling these are going to be a big hit!

It feels like we're all set for Easter now! One month early too! t

In the meantime, I'll be burning the oil lamps to warm up these chilly Scandinavian evenings and enjoying my granola even more from my glass bowl!

I hope there's something in this collection that has caught your eye too. Pernille Bülow ships worldwide (more info here).

Would you like to see more from their collection? Take a peek at the SKY Lamp here, here and here in my home and the Pernille Bülow Odin glassware captured at my summer cottage (I have such great memories from that day!), and also the ReUse outdoor light chain in my little back garden. So many lovely things in one place!

If you have any questions about anything else you see in these pictures please do give me a shout in the comment section below, I'll be happy to help.

Right friends, I think that's it for the week!

Wishing you all a wonderful couple of days and see you Monday!

Niki

A Beautiful Southern Sweden Home (With An Adorable Pooch!)

I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but Per is from Sweden's eighth largest city - Helsingborg. It's a fairly small town (says the Londoner!) but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in charm. The town is characterised by pretty squares lined with cafes and restaurants, cobbled streets and wonderful views over the Öresund strait to Kronborg castle in Denmark. It's not often I feature homes from the town, so I was very excited to stumble across Hannes Mauritzson's apartment earlier this week. Hannes lives with his partner Alexander and beloved dog Charlie in a building that dates back to the late 19th century. When Hannes isn't at his desk in a PR firm in Malmö, he's styling and capturing his home for his inspiring Instagram feed @hannesmauritzson. I caught up with my new Nordic friend to find out more about his adorable furry friend, interior design and life in Helsingborg.

Charlie seems to have captured the hearts of many near and far, can you tell us a little more about him?
He always charms people. Whenever I ask people what they would like me to publish its always more pictures of him!

I'm not surprised, he's the cutest! What breed is he?
Charlie came into my life about two years ago. he's an Irish soft-coated wheaten terrier with lots of energy, there's no denying that! But I think that's one of the things that makes home so loveable. He greets everyone we cross paths with and sees everyone (including other dogs) as a potential best friend!

Charlie keeps guard over a rattan and wood bench from HM Home (I've got my eye on this along with the chair!).

Your home is so beautiful, do you work in the field of interior design?
I work in PR and Digital Growth at a Malmö-based PR firm. When I'm not in the office, I use my time to be as creative as I can. I love interior design and have started appreciating photography more and more. I love spending hours figuring out what to photograph and how to stage a picture to post on Instagram

It's fun to peek inside a Helsingborg apartment - can you tell us a little more about it?
Our apartment dates back to the late 19th century and is in a lovely town called Helsinborg, Skåne (Scania), in the southernmost part of Sweden. The city is by the Öresund, the strait which forms the Denmark-Sweden border. Our apartment has four rooms.

Did it need a lot of work when you moved in?
It was completely renovated when we moved in. But that didn't stop me from repainting it anyway! I bought about ten different colour samples for the bedroom, but ended up settling on something completely different without even getting a sample.

Ha! Been there done that many times! Which colour did you settle for in the end?
I love the texture and look of whitew3ash, so it as an easy decision to make. I decided on Washed Linen from Jotun, Lady Minerals. The colour turned out to be perfect!

Cane headboard from Jotux, this brown linen bedding* is similar

What's your approach to decorating?
When I decorate a room, I usually use colours that make me feel calm, like grey and beige. I try not to over furnish a space in order to create a room that is both visually appealing and healing. For example, I'd rather use one large vase than several smaller details.

How would you describe your style?
My style follows the traditional Scandinavian household. Recently I've started to buy more antique and second hand items which is both kinder to the environment and my wallet! I feel the perfect mix of old and new contributes to a household that is filled with life. I love items that have a past.

How do you make your home feel cosy?
To compliment the neutral base, I decorate with vases, coffee cups, and dried flowers. Dried flowers hang all over my walls at home - it may look weird to some, but for me, it contributes to a home that feels comfortable to live in.

Finally, can you share your three best tips for anyone visiting Helsingborg?
1. Enjoy a Swedish fika: If you ever decide to take a trip to the charming city of Helsingborg, I highly recommend treating yourself to a cup of coffee and a slice of cake at the lovely cafe Ebbas Fik. They serve a traditional Swedish fika, but with a unique, American-inspired 50s twist.
2. Take a hike: After your fika, take a long but cosy walk along the strait until you reach Pålsjö forest. The view is spectacular!
3. Go interior shopping: If you're more interested in interior design, which I totally understand, I suggest you visit Staken & Veken. They sell candles made from scratch in all different shapes, sizes and fragrances. They of course also have a wide variety of antique furniture that's impossible not to fall in love with.

Thank you so much Hannes. I'm starting to feel like a trip to Helsingborg is in order!

What a great way to finish off the week! I hope you felt as inspired by Hannes home as I am!

In case you'd like just a little more inspiration over the weekend here are a few more southern Sweden homes from the archive:

Right, I think that's it from me for the week! Thank you so much for stopping by!

Trevlig helg!

A Stationery Designer's Lovely Copenhagen Home

If you've been following My Scandinavian Home for many years (I know some of you've been stopping by since I started this blog in 2011 - thank you!), you'll know that I love to shake things up a little and try to share inspiration for all Scandi tastes and styles - whether large or small (or even on wheels), light or dark and sometimes even a pop of colour! Even if the home tour doesn't fit your specifications, I like to think you can get inspiration from anywhere, and if you look closely, there's always something new and intriguing to take away with you.

In Signe Birkving Bertelsen's Copenhagen home, there's one particular DIY idea that's really captured my imagination (and of course there's some incredible architecture and interior design at play too)! But first, allow me to introduce you.

Signe lives with her husband and two children Karl and Esther in the Danish capital and is co-founder of the danish stationery brand Notem Studio. Simple with a clean, minimalist finish, Signe's home is dotted with interesting furniture and ornaments, which she constantly moves around. As with every home, some are more important to her than others - and the beautiful stool from West Africa (made from a single piece of wood), the AeroPress coffee maker and Akari lamp are listed as ones she'd never part with!

Nora and Laura of Our Food Stories were there to capture these pictures.

Welcome to Signe's world!

This is the piece I was talking about!

And this is the stool from West Africa which Signe would never part with. I can see why, how about you?

I think my favourite corner is in the bedroom with the iconic wishbone chair, sheepskin and reading lamp. The picture also gives you a closer look at the beautiful wooden floor - something which so many old Copenhagen apartments are blessed with!

Is there anything that stood out to you about Signe's apartment? You can read the full interview and see more pictures of her home here

Would you like to take a peek inside a few other Copenhagen homes today? Here are some I love:

And one final question - what piece of furniture or accessory in your home would you never part with?

Niki

The wonderful home of a Swedish food blogger

Hello! I hope you had a great weekend?! Out of interest, do you follow any food blogs? I've been pinning yummy looking recipes on my food board for a while now (admittedly most involve either eggs or avocados!). I recently started following Swedish food blogger, journalist and editor Waltzing Matilde (delicious recipes by a Swede in english - what's not to love?!) And today I'm really excited to be able to share a sneak peek into her wonderful home styled / captured by Tina Hellberg and Idha Lindhag. The first thing I noticed of course - is her love of blue, which is evident throughout. it creates such a cool, calm effect and works beautifully against the reds and pinks. She's furnished the home with a lovely mix of Swedish antiques, mid-century finds and items collected on her travels. What a lovely home, don't you think?

Lovely!

Blue really is turning to be the accent colour of 2015. We're seeing so much of it right now. Do you remember this Danish apartment from a few weeks back?  And I love the bedroom wall in this swedish space and blue accessories in this pretty apartment. I also love the blue sofa in the home of Sofia Wood (another Swedish food blogger). For a similar blue paint colour seen in the walls of Matilde's home try Parma Gray or Lulworth Blue.

If you're stuck for what to eat this week I can highly recommend looking through some of the mouthwatering recipes on Matilde's blog. Some of my favourites include Swedish pancakes with cream cheese, lemon curd and cardamom, Swedish chokladbollar with a twist and a meatball sandwich with beetroot, apples and capers. Mmmmmm!

Thank you so much to Idha Lindhag for sending me these fab photos. She always finds the most wonderful homes to photograph including Jade Jagger's Goa hangout, and this and this fabulous Swedish space one.

Have a great start to the week! I'm on my way to New York right now - soooo excited!

An elegant Stockholm pad with fab windows

It's the weekend! Yay! I actually thought it'd never arrive as my family have all been sick. Poor things! I'm also a bit worried as we have a 7 hour flight on Sunday and I've yet to catch the horrible bug eeeeek. To say I've washed my hands to obsessive levels over the last 24 hours would be an understatement!! I'm also camping out at a coffee shop by the sea to work (under the advice of my doctor sister - if you say so Cas)! On a brighter note,  having blogged about Scandinavian homes for over four years I've started to recognise the photographer before I've even seen the credits. One Swedish photographer with a particularly strong signature style is the talented Kristofer Johnson. You may remember this and this home he captured recently. And now he's back with an equally elegant space in Stockholm. The home belongs to photographer / blogger Louise Ljungberg and has been decorated throughout with that fab mix of grey, green and blue.  I particularly love the sofas and the wonderful windows between the kitchen and bedroom. Let's take a tour...

Styling Anna Mårselius. Photography Kristofer Johnsson. Residence magazine.

Everything about this space is just so calm and the large arched windows are beautiful! I also love the shelves across the windows in the kitchen - very clever (do you remember the window shelves in this Australian beach house too?).

Oh how I could camp out here for the weekend, how about you?!

Get the look: Source a rustic bench here (I've just bought one for my bedroom!). Louise's artwork can be spotted throughout the space and is available here. Washed linen bedding in charcoal, light grey, and navy (absolutely love this colour). Dark grey knitted throw.

More absolutely lovely homes captured by Kristofer include a Stockholm pad with a mix of vintage, Ylva Skarp's magnificent country home and the Swedish home of a fashion stylist.

Right, I'd better go off and pack for our holiday - exciting!! Have you ever been to Sri lanka? I will of course be blogging throughout my time there, although bear with me if I have a little wifi trouble at times.

Have a wonderful weekend!

PS One of my all time favourite bloggers, Victoria of SF Girl By Bay - has written such a nice review of my book here. Thank you so much Victoria!

PPS If you're looking for some bedroom inspiration, how about this tip / tour from my lovely friend Valentina (who's home I once featured here).
