Captains Cottage: A Super Cosy Bolthole in Hobart, Tasmania

The weather has cooled dramatically this week in Sweden. Is Autumn in the air where are you are too? I should be dreaming of knitted scarves, steaming mugs of coffee, roaring fires and all the other magical things the new season brings with it. But I'm not. I'm dreaming of a winter escape to Tasmania (where it's a little warmer) and a stay at this charming cottage. Wait, before you say anything, you need to take a peek for yourself! Located in Hobart's central business district, the cosy listed cottage was built in the mid 1800s for a sea captain. Owners Kylie and Sean Breaker have lovingly furnished it with an eclectic blend of vintage finds and newer pieces - as well as a subtle nod to its sea-faring past. "Captains Cottage is where we love to stay when visiting Hobart and is your haven too. We hope you fall in love with her as we have," say Kylie and Sean to potential guests. Now there's an invite!

Could you imagine staying here?

I'm feeling like a trip to Tasmania is in order. I'd totally combine it stay with a stay on Satellite island too!

Mind you, I've been saying that for years.

Read more about Captains Cottage and book your stay here or on airbnb.

Also in Tasmania:

A dreamy little cottage by the sea

Feeling the Tasmania cottage love today - how about you?

Airbnb / Holiday Let: Your Own Bohemian-Style Hideaway In The Desert!

Do you ever feel like you need to get away from it all? Somewhere peaceful where you have space to think and 'just be'? If so, I might have found just the secluded hideaway for you and it's available on Airbnb! Little Jo (great name!) is tucked away in the northern corner of Joshua Tree, Southeast California with panoramic views over the desert. Inside, the 1950s bungalow is a sea of brown,  cream and white with a distinct boho vibe. Bringing friends? There's a separate casita with a queen size bed and a covered terrace for that first coffee of the day (you know, when you're not quite ready to face the world!). What a dreamy home from home!

I'm already picturing myself on the porch nursing an ice cold G+T while the sun goes down, how about you?!

I have to confess, it would need to be a trip with friends - being an avid sailor, Per might feel it's a little far from the sea for his liking! Mind you, he might change his mind when he sees the guitar and record collection!

Could you imagine recharging your batteries here?

You can read more about Little Jo here

Other holiday lets / escapes I love the look of:

Also see a load of fabulous Design Hotels - for all budgets!

Speaking of which, it's Per and my 10 year wedding anniversary at the end of June and we're looking for a a wonderful, relaxing weekend getaway in Europe. Do you have any tips on great places to go / a beautiful place to stay? I feel a bit paralysed for choice right now and need a helping hand!

Happy lillördag (little Saturday!) all!

Niki

Holiday here: A Romantic Lakeside Schoolhouse In Sweden

We've had a few days of beautiful weather in Scandinavia. The plants, trees and flowers have burst into life and are all aglow in the golden sunlight (it didn't get dark until 23.30 where I am in Norway right now!). We finally dare to dream of long summer days by the water. If you're heading this way and looking for something quintessentially Swedish, I may just have the ticket! Owned by photographer Frida Edlund, this romantic 19th century Falu red and white schoolhouse in Värmland offers a rare chance to go back to basics and enjoy everything the Swedish summer has to offer.  Surrounded by lakes and acres of woodland. the secluded environment is perfect for morning dips, boating, hiking, fishing, cycling, dining alfresco by the lake or simply sitting by a log fire with a good book - and it's available via Airbnb!

Could you wile away a summer here? I certainly could!

Find out more and check availability on here. It's available for film shoots, conferences, as a party venue or simply somewhere to switch off for a few days and enjoy everything the Swedish nature has to offer in summer! Basically any excuse to go there and you're in! Got to love that!

It's also worth keeping an eye on the @valleyschoolhouse instagram for upcoming photography workshops with Frida - how I'd love to participate in one of those, how about you?

More places to stay in Sweden this summer.

Välkommen!

Niki

PS Coincidentally, Frida worked on the Rosenhave packaging for Skandinavisk - with whom I am touring the breathtaking Hardanger Fjord fruit trail in West Norway (more on stories!). This morning we're heading to Bergen. I can't wait to share more with you when I return!

Plans For The Summer? How About This 19th Century Estate in Normandy?!

Do you have any plans for the summer?! We'll likely head to our summer cottage to relax and (hopefully!) soak up the Swedish summer sun - if the kitchen is finished, of course! But we also like to find one new adventure to surprise our children with, even if it's just for a weekend. Last year we rented a VW camper van and drove around Cornwall, South West England (it was so much fun - but oh, how I loved being back in my own bed afterwards! have you ever slept in one of those things?!).  So, this year I'm thinking purely comfort (OK, and design!). Which is why this beautiful house popped up in my feed (thank you Style Files!)! Located 100km from Paris in a little village in Normandy, France, Riverside House is a 19th century estate overlooking the Seine river. The American / Canadian owner lovingly renovated the house taking inspiration from coastal California architecture and lifestyle. Rental guests can expect days "in front of a fire, sitting out in the sun under the centennial trees or walking off to explore the peaceful trails." Oh, how I could use a day or two like that right now, how about you?! And once you see inside, I've a feeling you'll be completely sold (at least I am!). Bienvenue!

I might just have to leave this blog page open for Per to see when he comes home. A trip to Normandy might be in order!

Could you imagine spending your holiday here?

Read more about the Riverside House estate and make bookings here

In case, like me, you now have France on your mind, you might like to also check-out La Belle Vue guest house  and this idyllic holiday home in the South of France. Oh la la

Looking for inspiration for your own home? Don't miss Zoé de las Cases' Paris apartment and Normandy country home - SO incredible!

Bon week-end!

Niki

PS A little heads up that it's the final weekend to make the most of the 20% discount off a new room design from My Scandinavian Home Studio. If you're scratching your head about a room in your home, we can help you with a layout as well as colour, furniture and accessory suggestions, wherever you are in the world! Sign-up here! Code: MYNEWROOM :) We'd love to help!

A Beautiful Airbnb Holiday Rental in Bergen, Norway

Are you planning on visiting Norway anytime soon? If so the beautiful west coast city of Bergen is a must - and I have just the place for you to stay! Located on one of Bergen's pretty narrow lanes which lead down to the waterfront, this historic three storey townhouse dates back to the 18th century and has been beautifully restored by Canadian-Bergen architect Todd Saunders. Airbnb guests are invited to relax in the open-plan, light-filled rooms, pad around on douglas spruce wood floors and enjoy the simple, predominantly white interior which is peppered with design pieces and this season's 'new neutral' tones. Sounds like my kind of holiday rental - how about you?! Let's take a peek!

What do you reckon? Could you imagine hanging out here for a few days?!

Funnily enough I'll be in Norway in a few weeks time since I'm holding a talk about Scandinavian design on a cruise ship (an all time first!). Perhaps I should jump ship for a few days and head down to Bergen? It's been years since I was there and now I have somewhere pretty to stay too!

Meet you there?!

If you're after a little more Norwegian inspiration today you must check out the cosy and relaxed home of a Norwegian blogger, a beautifully serene Norwegian space and a charming Norwegian home in green, grey and cognac.

Thank you so much to my blog friend Katarina Dima for discovering this little pearl of a holiday home!

Have a fabulous day all!

Niki
