A Windswept Danish Summer Cottage by the Sea

Even though it no longer feels like high summer here (there's a distinct crispness in the air come evening), we're doing our best to keep the summer vibe alive. That means daily dips in the sea (Per!), evening trips out on the boat and refusing to wear anything but shorts, even if they do now occasionally require a big woolly jumper on top.

As part of my bid to stretch summer out for as long as possible, I'm also sharing another beautiful home by Danish interior designer @vestkysthjem. This time, we're heading to a pretty wooden summer cottage tucked among the sand dunes near Husby on Denmark's wild west coast. The little village lies in West Jutland, close to the North Sea and surrounded by some wonderfully windswept scenery.

The cottage feels perfectly at home in its coastal setting. Inside, pale blue and softly weathered timber walls are paired with warm wooden floors, Danish design furniture and an appealing mix of old and new. Open shelves are filled with pottery and everyday treasures, while linen curtains, woven chairs, vintage lighting and the odd sheepskin add softness and warmth. And with the dunes peeking through almost every window, you're never in any doubt that the North Sea is just beyond the door. Dip anyone?

Enjoy the tour!

Lovely! I can just imagine coming home after a brisk walk along the windswept shore, lighting a candle, pouring a cup of tea and settling in for the evening. How about you?

Did you miss the previous home I featured? If so, or if you’d simply like another peek, you can take a tour of this dreamy Danish thatched summer house by the sea.

Here’s hoping the warmish weather sticks around for as long as possible, if only so Per can keep enjoying his beloved after-work kvällsdopp (evening dip!).

Thank you so much for stopping by today, I hope you have felt inspired!

Niki

  1. This cottage is lovely.....and since I am living under a heat dome in Midwest America today, the windswept description is especially appealing. I am enjoying my tour with an iced coffee and think a cup of tea sounds nice right about now! It will happen eventually!!! I love, love, love the faded color scheme and natural materials. The bowl of beach rocks and driftwood construct are just right. This is a place of peace. Thank you for sharing. : > )

  3. When I looked at the previous Danish thatched summer house by the sea in the link, the living room in both looks identical! My mind must be playing tricks on me. :)

    3. Oj (as they say in Sweden) - I wonder if the sitting room belongs to this home or the other home? I'll investigate! Thank you so much for pointing this out.

  4. What I admired was the exterior wall paneling, 'brushed' and 'washed', with the signboard 'marhalmen'. The porch, the rocking chair by the window. Open shelving in the kitchen with stoneware and pegs for utensils. Powder blue - egg shell blue paint mirroring the blue of the sea. I agree in a cottage like this you only want to see and hear the beauty in nature.

The cold dips must be a relief to Per after a long day- alone time. Like to sit outside with a coffee/ tea in the morning and evening. Forget everything else☺

    1. Yes, I love the exterior too! There is something about a house with a name. Sometimes I wonder if we should give our summer cottage a name. It's never had one before, would it be strange to suddenly introduce one?

The powder blue is so pretty - thank you for sharing so many of your observations.

  5. Isn't this perfect? Like my fellow midwesterner, above, we are under a miserable heat dome, and I'm envious of your cool evenings, Niki. I'll refresh myself with these pictures. Such a calming place. Love how they used shelving in the kitchen and living area to add storage in a decorative manner.

  8. What I admired most was the charming exterior wall paneling, beautifully brushed and washed, along with the simple “marhalmen” signboard. The welcoming porch and rocking chair beside the window added a peaceful touch. Inside, the open kitchen shelves displayed lovely stoneware, while wooden pegs kept utensils neatly arranged. The soft powder-blue and eggshell-blue paint beautifully reflected the color of the sea. In a cozy cottage like this, the calm atmosphere of win pak blends naturally with the beauty of the surrounding landscape. It is the kind of place where you simply want to relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature.
