A Peek Inside a Perfectly Compact Swedish Home

A smaller space for you today—and proof that a 19-square-metre (204-square-foot) apartment can have everything you could want and more! This cosy living space in Stockholm is perfectly designed to make the owner feel at home: a delightfully personal living area looking out over the courtyard, a little dining table, kitchenette, and bedroom.

Touches of blue, pink, yellow, and green add a cheerful and inviting feel to the decor, while the tactile velvet sofa looks like the perfect spot to cosy up with a coffee and a good book. And what’s more, the home has plenty of storage too, with bookshelves that go up and around the balcony door and an entire unit in the bedroom for clothes and accessories.

Welcome inside this charming home for one in the heart of the Swedish capital!

A balcony extends the living space in spring, summer and autumn.

Balconies like these often come with a concrete floor, but adding wood decking is a great way to make it feel more warm and inviting.

The kitchen area makes full use of the high ceiling and offers plenty of space for crockery, glasses and utensils, which helping the space to feel less cluttered.

I love how the bed is in a nook, for a more private feel. The windowsill can double up as a bedside table and built in storage units offer plenty of space for clothes.

Incidentally, these Swedish apartments often come with a 'cage' in the basement for extra storage—perfect for things like Christmas decorations, skiing equipment, and other bulky items. It’s such a smart feature and really helps to keep the living area free from clutter.

I’m curious—do you live in a small space like this? If so, what have you found to be the biggest benefits and challenges when it comes to decorating and furnishing a one room apartment? Maybe you’ve discovered some brilliant solutions too—if so, I’d love to hear them!

Could you imagine living here? I know I certainly could!

I'm off to Copenhagen this afternoon to visit my wonderful client Skandinavisk. They have just launched an exciting candle and scent diffuser in a new fragrance called KYSS (meaning kiss in Swedish and Norwegian) and it smells divine (such a perfect valentine's present!)! I'm hoping to pick one up for my home so I can spread a little love!

Have a lovely day friends–happy mid-week!

PS I snuck in an extra post yesterday about my forthcoming trip to Formland in Denmark - did you see it? There's a nice little instagram tip in it for anyone visiting Copenhagen too!

  1. Love! Thank you for showing a beautifully done tiny space and how they set up a clever functional clothing closet. Thank you also for explaining about cellar storage, I never like when blogs fail to explain where/how extras are stored.

    1. Thank you for recognising that, I felt it was important since it's slightly easier to keep a small space clutter-free when you don't have year round stuff to store in addition to everyday items!

  2. What a dream! I love the color combinations with the sofa and pillows. It's my idea of the perfect amount of color--enough for personality, not so much that it hits you in the face. I'd like to see the floor plan on this one.

Our home isn't this small, but it isn't huge, and I like to see how people organize smaller spaces to make them both functional and beautiful. Ideas like the hanging hook for the purses, pictured above, are great thoughts. I incorporated some of the ideas I have seen on your site when we were planning for my daughter's dorm room storage this past fall. :)

  4. I also love the dreamy colors combined in the sofa, cushions and rug. And the storage that's been engineered into the kitchen and bedroom makes the tiny abode actually seem quite livable. Until you mentioned the basement cages I was wondering where the balcony furniture and décor would go during harsh weather... mystery solved! (Clever Swedes)

    1. I thought it was important to mention that, as some of these out-of-season items require a whole other level of storage!

  6. This is another wonderful home that highlights how style, beauty and smart planning to maximize living is not dependent on home size. I also love the blue velvet sofa with the pillows and rug. It’s a lovely shade and melds together with other elements in the space.

  8. I'd love a simple plan of the apartment to show where everything is - I assume the 'bedroom' is in an L-shaped nook off the lounge area and beautiful balcony! Love compact living!

  10. I love the soft, dreamy look in this thoughtfully designed interior, and that the designer did not choose furniture too large for the space. Everything is appropriately small, yet the couch is cosy and inviting. The apartment has a welcoming, rich feel. The balcony adds a lot of livability to the space. Pirjo

  11. The birch tree? provides a beautiful backdrop, and with that deck, this home must come alive in spring and summer. Adequate storage for pots and books, enough room for a fredagsmys with friend, only wish a desk/workspace had been built into the wardrobe area. Blues seem to complement most colors beautifully! Thank you so much for sharing and hope you are having a great week:)

    2. The mention of the cage is interesting we have high ceilings and I always wonder how people get up to tall cupboards etc as you rarely see step ladders. This apartment is inspiring.
