A Young Couple's Classic & Elegant Danish Home

MSH is turning into a bit of a Danish home love fest this week. This is the third home I've shared from that Nordic country this week (I hope you enjoyed the lovely pastel infused apartment on Tuesday and the summer cabin yesterday!). When you see the pictures, I'm sure you'll understand why! Twenty-four-year-old Liva Tholstrup and her boyfriend have decorated their turn-of-the-century apartment in Frederiksbjerg, Aarhus in an elegant, classic Scandinavian style, combining earthy tones with design classics and a wealth of natural materials. Pretty ceramic collections, an array of vases and various wall decor help to give the space a lovely homely vibe. Julie Wittrup Pladsbjerg and Mikkel Dahlstrøm of Another Studio were there to snap some pictures.

I love this look, simply because I really love the classic Danish style. It helps that the apartment has incredible bones too - which add a decorative touch to the simple aesthetic.

Is there anything that caught your eye?

When I was 24 (the same age as Liva) I had recently graduated from university and was living in Dubai, working as an event organiser. I was living in a shared rental apartment. I remember decorating my room (painting the walls, putting up posters etc) but it certainly wasn't in the same calibre as this! Where were you and what did your accommodation look like when you were 24?

See more snapshots of Liva's lovely home here - and there's a wonderful article about it in Alt. magazine (in Danish).

It's SO sunny and warm here today, in fact the nicest day we've had in months. So, I'm heading off in a minute to catch a few rays Scandi style (winter coat buttoned up, face angled towards the sun!). I hope the sun is shining where you are too!

  1. I was living in a rented flat in Oslo, in the area Majorstuen, sharing with a friend. The building was nice, one of those classic buildings with high ceilings etc. My room had very green walls that I wasn't allowed to paint over, a pine bed, white closet etc. So not my style. Most of the furniture came with the flat. The few pieces I owned myself came from IKEA. The style of those where minimalist, clean, natural wood etc. Not at all any of the beautiful design pieces in this apartement - that was NOT in my budget as a 24 year old who worked and studied. I was just starting to figure out my style, but it was not as refined as this! Must say I am impressed by this being the flat of a 24-year old. It looks so well thought out and personal, not something you just pick out as a complete room at Ikea or Illums.

  2. I was living in a series of rented studios and motel rooms as I traveled across the southern U.S. (North Miami Beach, El Paso, New Mexico, San Diego, L.A.). I had a small Toyota pickup truck, with a camper shell, that carried my dog and a small number of possessions that I collected through my travels; some pieces I still have. Wherever I was, I would "dress up" these anonymous spaces with my limited possessions. Nothing as beautiful and sophisticated as this apartment, but that wasn't my focus at the time. Nowadays, I prefer to have a home base, and I would love it to look like above, including my collection from my travels.

  3. You are kidding me with those windows?! So nice. We moved to Canada when I was 23. At 24, I was sharing a 1 bedroom apartment with my sister and parents (my sister and I shared a bedroom while my parents made a "bedroom" out of the dining area). We were going to school, no money for anything and our furniture was given to us by the government. It was super cheap particleboard furniture but my dad still has the dresser and two bedside tables, he just painted them white and is super happy with them :-). It wasn't a happy time but we were building our future and now I remember it fondly. I wish it was as nice of a place as Liv's is.

  4. Loving your Danish home love fest! This home is a balance of oh-so-pretty with chic style. What I think I’m trying to say (besides I love it) is that it is gorgeous without being too precious or overly sweet. Those windows are stunning.
