A vintage inspired Silver Lake home

Hej hej! Are you ready for a little boho-vintage love today? LA interior designer, Kaitlin McHugh, her musician boyfriend Brendan Hines, their cat and pup Charlie, are welcoming us into their wonderful Silver Lake home today and it's full of lovely vintage and mid-century modern pieces! Kaitlin is a firm a believer in reusing and up-cycling but also loves to blend in work by contemporary artists and craftspeople. Think mid-century armchairs, marble tables, planters, kilim cushions, and photo art for a truly personal and relaxed home. Enjoy!

So much soul! Don't you think?

Get the look: sitting room - sofa by Folke Ohlsson (try Ebay), this is a great source for vintage mid-century armchairs, photo art - El Matador by Jon Rou (I love many of his pieces - how beautiful is the Beach?), pick up Kilim cushions / pillows here (love this lumbar one!).

If you'd like to find out more about Kaitlin's home you can see more pics and read the full feature here.

Other mid-century inspired spaces I love (and there's lots!) include this charming inner-city home, Holly's sitting room and a 1920s home decorated on a shoe-string budget. And for an entire day of mid-century lovin' - there's always the archive! If this one comes up first just scroll passed.

Have a lovely day!

PS I'm waiting for a great friend of mine to arrive from London - oh how I love summertime! Hope you've got some fun plans over the next few days too.

A lovely, laid-back home in Brooklyn

Hello FREDAG (friday), woooop! We're up at the family summer cottage on Sweden's Southwest coast and it's been pouring with rain all day. But sometimes don't you find that's totally OK? We've been playing cards, listening to music and baking a cake (not me - the man and our youngest - you might recall I'm taking a break from baking after a number of catastrophes!). There are some homes that look like the sun is shining even when it isn't though - and the apartment of Ana Fritsch is one of them. Ana lives with her husband and two daughters in a Brooklyn Brownstone from where she pens her lifestyle blog Lucky Penny and runs her shop.  The 74 metre square (800 square foot) apartment is blessed with high ceilings (seems to be a common theme this week!) and large windows which fill the space with light. Look closely and you'll also discovered layered rugs, quirky finds and patterned textiles - all of which add to the wonderful, laid-back vibe - enjoy!

Such a lovely home, don't you think?!

Those floors.....!

Get the look from Ana's home: sitting room - source a lovely kilim rug here and layer it with a jute rug, this grey armchair is similar, palms pillow, mustard pillow (similar), windson armchair. Bedroom - gold pig, ocean print, shibori dot quilt.

You can find out more about what Ana loves about her home here and see a full tour and interview over at the fabulous Glitter Guide.

I also really love the cheerful Brooklyn home of an artist,  the happy Brooklyn home of a Swedish expat and a calm Brooklyn home. Or for something a little Scandinavian (and different) - I never tire of a Swedish summer cottage!

Have a wonderful weekend!

PS OK rain, you can stop now....

A small, yet truly inspiring studio apartment!

I've shown many, many small spaces over the years - the majority of which are located in Sweden, but some have been in far away places too, like this tiny home on wheels!  And today I stumbled on another inspirational small space - the studio apartment of Lauren Maclean. Located in Montreal, Canada, Lauren's home is a mere 500 square foot (46 square metre).  Dramatic high ceilings and beautiful period features provide a striking backdrop for a blend of vintage and mid-century pieces as well as some striking works of art. It really does go to show, that some of the best homes come in small packages, don't you agree?!

What a great space? The more I look at the pictures, the more I notice!

I particularly love the one-off vintage pieces, mid-century furniture and lighting (how fab is that Pelle chandelier ceiling light?!). How about you?

A quick note on where some of the other key pieces are from: art (over desk) by Lysa JordanWishbone chair, modern dresser, sofa by design republic,

You can see more of Lauren's apartment over on her fab instagram feed, and a full interview here.

Have a lovely day!

Holly's beautiful sitting room make-over

Hej hej! One of my favourite interior designers, Holly Marder, is doing up her house in Delft, Holland bit by bit and I'm glued to her blog Avenue Lifestyle, for updates! It's such a treat every time she completes a room (see Holly's beautiful kitchen, bedroom and studio and you'll know what I mean)! Today I'm excited to reveal Holly's lovely new sitting room where she has used white washed walls and sheer linen curtains (source similar, made to measure ones here) as a neutral backdrop for a beautiful blend of vintage, mid-century, and modern designer pieces as well as handmade ceramics and a selection of artowrk.  Enjoy!

Such a stunning room, don't you think? Relaxed, calm, interesting and above all else cosy!

Holly is a master at gallery walls (I also love the one she created in a client's bedroom in Amsterdam). Here she's combined oak, walnut and white frames with a mix of contemporary and traditional art including 'dragonfly' by Eile-Ethel Polli, 'nude painting of one minute pose' by Gretchen Kelly, and 'eye eye' by Fine Little Day. Such a lovely combination!

I also like how she has used a mid-century bar cart to fill the gap next to the chimney breast (I still love my bar cart but wondering where to put it right now since acquiring this brass one, I'm sure it'll find a home soon! Thoughts?!). You can source a similar vintage mid-century bar cart here.

Is there anything that stands out to you?

Get the look from Holly's sitting room: Flos pendant light, source a vintage Beni Ourain rug here, the sofa is from the SofaCompany.  These fab vintage mid-century trolleys / bar carts are similar. Flos parentesi light, African Bingan basket, hand turned plates on wall by Julie AlrichemGlass coffee table,  white plate from The Fine Store (on table).

The sun's shining here in Malmö so I've promised to take a walk along the beach before starting to write a chapter for my new book - Lagom (a Swedish philosophy meaning not too much, not too little - just right!). It feels apt in today's world where we're all rushing about and connected 24/7. The book is very much about slowing down and finding balance, the Swedish way - whether at home, or through activities like blackberry picking , kayaking, baking bread, swapping your car for a bike or even finding a beautiful old cottage by the sea in which to relax and unwind in the holidays! I hope you'll find it inspiring!

Have a lovely day!

Snapshots from Claudi and Tiger's lovely Berlin home

Tjoohoo! It's a beautiful day here in Malmö (hey, I'll take anything other than snow right now!). Yesterday I had such a fun day filming with German TV channel  DW-TV around the fascinating term  'lagom' (a Swedish word essentially meaning not too much, not too little: just right) set to air this Saturday. The TV crew were based in Berlin, which is one of my absolute favourite cities (have you ever been? - if not you must!). Today I thought I'd share the home of another Berliner: Claudi. Claudi is a photographer and blogger behind Do it, but do it now and regularly shares snapshots of her home, DIY ideas and fabulous places in Germany's hip capital city. Her home, which she shares with her feline friend Tiger (short for Tigerlily) is packed with vintage finds, mid-century pieces, handmade details and an abundance of plants. Let's take a peek....

Photography: Claudetta Böttcher / Do it but do it now.

Oh so lovely and relaxed! I particularly like the unusual pieces like the green chair in the kitchen and round shelves in the sitting room - so inspiring! Did anything catch your eye?

A few items from Claudi's home: source vintage crates hereblack letter board, Kay Bojesen monkey, this rug is similar (made to order!), blanket from Elmas Home

For more pics of her home, DIY ideas, and tips on Berlin (among other things) check out Claudi's blog (in German) and instagram. I've also been having a snoop around Claudi and her boyfriend's fab interiors shop Elmas Home - definitely worth a look!

You might also want to take a peek at these lovely spaces with a mid-century touch: a charming innercity home with soul, a Dutch home in an old tannery and a fabulous mid-century modern home in LA home - a few of my favourite homes!

Have a lovely day!
