Escaping to the Woods: Frederika's Swedish Summer Cabin

It’s a beautiful, sunny day in Scandinavia, which means my mind immediately drifts to the idyllic life at a Swedish summer cottage. Over Easter, many spent time preparing theirs for the season, and now we’re all counting down the days until July, when we can close the doors to our city homes and head to the countryside.

Since summer cottages are all about slowing down and spending quality time with family and friends, many choose to expand their living space by adding small garden dwellings – known as an attefallshus (25 m² / 269 ft²) or komplementsbostadshus (30 m² / 323 ft²). These charming little houses offer a perfect spot for extended family or visiting friends to stay.

I recently featured Frederika Palmstierna’s boho Stockholm apartment, and today, I thought I’d share the beautiful cabin she recently built on the grounds of her family’s summer cottage. Inspired by a design from SommarnΓΆjen, the cabin’s green wooden faΓ§ade blends effortlessly into the surrounding woodland.

On warm summer days, large glass doors open wide, creating a seamless flow between indoors and out – making the most of the compact living space. On chillier days, meals are enjoyed in the cosy kitchen area, or the family (including their lovely dog!) likes to curl up by the wood-burning stove. Simply furnished yet wonderfully inviting, it’s the perfect little retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Let's take a peek!

Lovely!

The light wood and white interior reminds me very much of our little cabin, which we too are layering over time.

Could you imagine spending your summer here? Is there anything that stood out to you?

In case you missed the link at the beginning, make sure you take a look at Frederika's charming Stockholm apartment, which is filled with art.

And why not take a look at small space inspiration from Swedish attefallshus - they are great for small space ideas!

Wishing you a happy mid-week!

  1. I’m a city girl and after twenty years in a small village in France I was delighted to be able to move to the centre of Nice but I must agree with you spending time in a beautiful cabin like this is very tempting.

    1. I have to admit, I'd never heard of the name 'balloon plant' before. Now that I've looked it up I understand what you mean - they are indeed so pretty! Maybe I should see if I can grow some in my summer cottage garden too - I wonder if they tolerate sandy, well-drained soil?

  4. This looks blissful! The ease of indoor/outdoor living and having those views from the inside or outside would be heavenly. I noticed what I thought might be white wash wooden walls (paneling?) on the walls which seems so appropriate for the setting. Beautiful shade of green for the exterior and I love the decking wrapping two sides of the cabin, offering choices for sitting or dining as the sun moves about. And the lovely vases and serving pieces… teapot, pitcher, etc. So handsome, might they be Georg Jensen?

    1. Thank you for pointing out all these lovely aspects. The kettle (which looks very much like a contemporary teapot) is from Boden - one of my friends has one and it really lifts her kitchen, it's very cool!

    2. Sorry, I completely spelt that wrong, it should be 'Bodum'. If you search for 'Bodum' here on the blog you'll find a few posts as I have partnered with them in the past - and I'm a big fan.

  5. The wood panelled walls are a great backdrop for the layers of texture and drops of color spread throughout. The paint is a wonderful base color. Love the ceramic vase of pussy willows...a sure sign of spring! The decks! Let's face it; even a hovel would look pretty outstanding in that gorgeous landscape! : > )

  6. Glad you are back, Niki:) More than anything, its the words that you weave around each dwelling that I look forward to every time. I agree with the above comment, a hut would look terrific in that landscape. In Frederika's attefallshus, each window is a piece of art, with pleasing cream and greens( the sheets and bedspread:0) Golden summers for her guests!

  7. I adore quirky small touches. They allow the decorator's personality to shine. The fish plate and the silver apple container, the linen prints and floral dishware, all so pretty! Where was that electric kettle when I was shopping for one??? I especially enjoyed the large windows--brings the feeling out outdoors into your home.
