Inside Anna's Coastal Home on a Swedish Island

Every time I visit Gothenburg on Sweden’s west coast, I marvel at how friendly the people are – it’s something they’re well known for. I sometimes wonder why they’re so cheerful, and I’ve come to the conclusion that it might have something to do with the incredible archipelago right on their doorstep. With thousands of islands and skerries, it’s a spectacular, rugged coastline dotted with picturesque fishing villages – and one of our favourite places to sail (see my guide to the islands).

Anna Järelöv, a teacher, lives right in the heart of this magical seascape. She and her husband Jacob share their home with their two children on the island of Köpstadsö, in the southern part of the Gothenburg archipelago.

I often find that with Swedish coastal homes, it’s not immediately obvious that they’re by the sea – but there are always subtle hints. A striped cushion here, a touch of blue there, maybe a mirror or lamp with a wave-like form, or a carefully chosen piece of artwork. In Anna Järelöv’s home, however, the biggest giveaway is the incredible view from the windows!

So, pull up a seat, take in the soothing earthy tones and soft textures, and imagine the gentle sound of the Kattegat Sea just beyond the glass. See how many coastal nods you can spot – this home is a true joy!

There were quite a few things that caught my eye in Anna’s lovely home: the kitty (of course!) looking perfectly content, the wavy pedestals for plants (such a lovely idea!), and the green-blue and white striped cushions with ruffled edges (so pretty!). The view from the windows and the terrace is absolutely spectacular too – the ever-changing shapes of the Kattegat Sea are something you’d never tire of.

Is there anything that caught your eye about Anna’s home? Or anything you're curious about that you’d like me to check with her?

  1. Many things caught my eye! My first impression was how rich this home is in textures. I found myself wanting to touch everything, especially the light over the desk area, which I think is glass, but gives the impression of fabric. And yes, I noticed the comfy cat all snuggled up. It would be a delight to see this home in person.

    1. I love that you highlight the textures Kris. In my Njuta book I talk a lot about how important 'touch' is in a home as it really elevates the entire experience (even swapping out a plastic cooking utensil for a wooden one can make a difference to your cooking experience).
The cat looks so comfy! :)

  3. Take a photo of the lamp and put it in Google images search and the lamp should come up, along with similar lamps

  4. What a soothing and pretty home! So many interesting lighting fixtures and lamps, and all the furnishings and decor accessories are so naturally beautiful together. Many of the art pieces seem to have an organic theme of the sea. Quite fitting given the gorgeous location and view. I spotted the STOFF Nagel candelabra on the cabinet in the dining room. (Side note, after you featured a home with one during the Christmas holidays, I’ve been inspired to start a collection. I can’t quite describe the feeling I had when I opened the package… maybe awe mixed with happiness?) Kitty appeared to be contentedly snuggled in that cozy spot!

  7. What a lovely home and place. I loved visiting Gothenburg as my brother and his Swedish wife had a house by the sea there - annoyingly they moved to Australia but I still miss their lovely home and visiting the Gothenburg area!

    1. There's nothing quite like visiting the Gothenburg archipelago for the first time - I was in absolute awe! Such a pity that your brother and sister-in-law have moved away, hopefully you will still get an opportunity to go back and visit the islands (and Gothenburg) again one day!

  8. How lovely! Where I live as soon as you walk into a home by the ocean you really know you’re there. Art work, bedding, towels, dishes , everything is covered in seashells, lobsters and beach umbrellas.

I obiecuję rozpowszechniać dobrą pracę Lorda Felixa.
