My home - bedroom tour

I've been meaning to finish my bedroom for ages.  I finally found the opportunity on a recent collaboration with the fab family run Danish homeware shop Nordal - who made it possible to add the final touches for Autumn - including a much needed rug, as well as a cosy quilt and beautiful bench. Our bedroom takes up the top floor of our house (some feel a big room is un-cosy, do you?) it's a very personal thing but I love to have lots of space around me, and even open the balcony door while I'm sleeping for extra measure! Having said that, I feel a bedroom should be calm. Somewhere you can relax and switch off from the stresses and strains of daily life. And as the cold weather starts to set in here in Sweden - cosy too! That's why I've stuck to neutral shades and layers of soft textiles in natural materials such as cotton, rattan, sheepskin and linen! Here's the reveal, I hope you like it!

Cosying up my bedroom with Bemz

Do you have a favourite room? A few years back we decided to turn the entire top floor of our house into our bedroom. It's become a little oasis among the rooftops of Malmö (if you peep out of the window you can see the sea too!). But with the drop in temperature we just weren't feeling the cosy vibe, and that's important right?! My Scandinavian Home interior designer Genevieve Jorn and I got together to make a plan  - yes, we take this kind of stuff very seriously! Having collaborated with Bemz before for my sitting room make-over (aaaaaah, I love that space - can I have two favourite rooms?!), we knew it would be easy to create an entirely new look without a whole load of hassle (and with all that's going on at this time of year, who needs that?!). If you're not familiar with Bemz, they make the most beautiful customised design covers for IKEA furniture (including sofas, armchairs, chairs etc) as well as curtains, cushions and bedroom textiles - in a choice of over 250 colours and patterns (machine washable and sewn to order too!). Read on to here more about the transformation!

  The Planning

Since we were aiming for a cocoon like feel, the room needed some some rich, warm tones, and yet at I also was keen to keep the Nordic aesthetic.

Bemz Rosendal Pure Washed Linen in White and Unbleached were the obvious choices to use for layers of soft textiles (linen has such a wonderful relaxed look and it's a great material since it's snug in the winter and helps keeps you cool in the summer). We combined it with Velvet Malmen in Chestnut cushion covers to ramp up the cosiness!

I'm particularly pleased with the bedspread made in Rosendal Pure Washed Linen in Unbleached in their Loose Fit Urban style. It's beautifully made with exposed seams and a lining. Best of all? When I'm in a bit of a hurry in the morning (err, daily) I can just chuck it over the bed! Yasss!

I've had my eye on the bed skirt made in Rosendal Pure Washed Linen in Absolute White in their Loose Fit Urban style for a while. A bed skirt / valance is a great way to hide the box spring, under bed storage, and all other kinds of stuff that finds it's way under there! This one is so pretty too, don't you think? I love the detail!

The Söderhamn one seat section with Urban Loose Fit cover in Rosendal Pure Washed Linen - Unbleached was a must. Not only does it mean I finally have an armchair in my bedroom for all my clothes. Eh hem.  I mean, for reading, the linen slipcover adds much needed cosiness to the window nook (check out the seams too).  I kind of want to sink in and stay there all day drinking coffee and flipping through magazines (what kids?!).

Or maybe the chestnut?

What I love most about Bemz is that you can quickly update the look of an item of furniture by replacing the slipcover whenever the mood takes you. For example, check out how switching to the Söderhamn 1 seat section cover in Malmen Velvet Chestnut gives a new look to my reading corner! The only problem now I can't decide which I prefer - what do you reckon?

So happy with the outcome, I hope you like it too.

If you're interested in getting a similar look in your home, you can shop the look at Bemz here

And in case you're wondering where any of the other items are from - there'll be a big follow-up post on Sunday covering all details - but feel free to ask away in the comment section below in the meantime!

Have a great weekend all!

Before & After: My Office Make-Over

Do you work from home? I've been sitting at my little desk in the corner of my bedroom for just over two years now. There are many pluses and minuses of working from home, but one of the things I truly love is having total autonomy over how my work space looks - no LED strip lights in sight! So why hadn't I done anything to spice it up (I mean, really spice it up) for over six years?! The thing is, there's nothing wrong with my office (it even appeared on the front cover of a book once upon a time!) but it began to feel well, a bit tired and I had started migrating to the kitchen table or a nearby café instead (they do serve great chocolates muffins so it's kind of understandable!). A friend of mine from Greenland told me recently that if you're not using the space for the purpose it's set out for, you need to re-think it. Wise words indeed! It was time to make a change...

Before

The Area

My home office occupies a corner in between the stairs and balcony at the far end of our bedroom on the very top floor of our house. The area I have to play with is pretty mini: approximately 3.4 metre square (36 square foot), which is open on one side. Here's a quick overview of the dimensions (as you can probably tell, I'm not a trained designer - the lines were drawn with the side of a magazine!) but I hope it gives you an idea of the area.

My Inspiration

Since changing my bedroom to warmer chestnut and blushing peach tones in the same open-plan room, I was keen to create more of a cohesive space (that's the problem with doing something new - it's exciting but has a total knock on effect - bah!).

While I wanted the office space to blend in, I also wanted to create a distinct space where I could sit and work, store all my books and have all my bits and bobs to hand: in other words, a complete mini office where I can work on my billion dollar deals (if only!). This meant re-configuring the space and picking up some new pieces such as a smaller desk to fit the shorter side of the space and a row of shelving opposite. Here is the original moodboard (put together with the help of designer extraordinaire Genevieve Jorn who also worked with me on the design of my adjoining bedroom):

It has the warm brown, chestnut and netural tones which I love and felt earthy, calm and relaxed.  I ended up changing the artwork selection to make it more personal and swapped out the rug for a similar one I already had.  See further down the post for the final selection!

The Paint:

I can't tell you how nervous I was about the Norwegian Wood paint colour (by Jotun) - it's quite possibly the boldest I've gone - eeeek! But I loved its warm, woody notes and was willing to give it a go! I tested a sample on the wall (it's always a good idea to observe the colour over a number of days to see how it looks in various lights) and was so thrilled with it!

To the paint the entire wall I stripped away the shelving to the right too. FYI I'm absolutely no painting and decorating pro  - but I'm learning paint splodge by paint splodge! After prepping the area with a damp cloth, tape and newspaper, I used a roller for the bigger areas (long strokes and a generous amount of paint is key) and a smaller paint brush to go around the edges and tighter corners.

Oh yes, and in order to create cohesiveness with the rest of the room I painted the entire wall below in the same Norwegian Wood colour. Of course, once I finished, I realised the back wall now looked a little yellow next to my lovely new accent wall - so this required a fresh lick of white - phew!

After

With the paint finally finished it was time for the fun part. To put the furniture and all my gear back in place! Here's how it's looking...

I was so happy to finally get around to putting up a moodboard of some of the items that inspire me right now. One challenge I still have though is the radiator. While it's going to be great for keeping my toes toasty in the winter, I'd much rather it was the same colour as the wall - next project?!

Hanging the artwork!

I didn't want to mess up my new, sparkling white wall with trillions of unnecessary holes- so I used an interior design trick I learned from Gen a while back (you may have seen it in this post). It's a really safe way to avoid making mistakes!

Here's a step by step guide:

1. Take a large roll of paper and draw around each of the pictures you intend to hang. Cut out the template.
2. Stick them on the wall with blu-tac - and play around with the templates until you have a composition you're happy with. Quick tip I learned: artwork looks best if it's around two thirds of the width of the furniture beneath it (of course rules are there to be broken and this is definitely not an instruction - more a guide if you're feeling stuck!).
3. Measure the distance of the hook on the back of the picture (both vertically and horizontally)
4. Mark out the same spot on your template on the wall.
5. Hammer a nail through the marked out spot
6. Tear away the template leaving the nail in place and you're ready to rock!

I hope you like the results! It was a fun project, but best of all I've got myself a shiny new work space (I'll have to do a take-out on those muffins instead!!

I've put together a quick guide on where a few of the items are from below. If I've missed anything just give me a shout in the comment section below!

Gen's Lovely Bedroom Refresh

Sponsored:
A few weeks ago I spent the day at my friend Genevieve Jorn's home. The French Canadian interior designer is a regular contributor here at MSH (I'm soooo lucky!) and lives in the most incredible early 20th century apartment in the centre of Malmö. You might recognise her home from this and this post. Then again you might not. You see, Gen has the propensity to update her apartment even more than I do (and that's really saying something as you know!). The latest room to be given a facelift is her bedroom. With spring just around the corner (yippee!), Gen moved away from slightly darker, moodier notes to a fresh look and feel while keeping the look warm and inviting with a touch of rattan and layers of textiles (love the Nordal cushions and rugs). Enjoy the tour!

Gen's three metre high ceilings and large bedroom is the stuff of dreams. I mean, could you imagine?! Even so, it can be tricky to create a cosy vibe. To compensate, Gen used a mound of soft cushions, throws and rugs (see below for details). The walls have been painted in SPACE by Jotun Lady Pure Colour up to the border which also helps to create a more intimate feel.

A simple wooden chair works perfectly as a bedside table! Admittedly, mine would have a mountain of stuff on it ("Chairdrobe: Piling clothes on a chair in place of a closet or a dresser") but Gen's one organised lady! Check out this post for more details on the fabulous prints!

Mixing and matching patterns and textures is the way to go for a warm and inviting look - I love how some of the cushions like this one have a bit of of a boho vibe going on too!

I'm such a big fan of Peacock chairs, there's something decadent yet understated about them - could you imagine having one in your home? Or perhaps you already do (I've got one in my bedroom)!

"I love how the light shines through the chair and casts shadows on the wall." Genevieve Jorn.

Oj oj oj (as they say in Sweden!) what a lovely bedroom! Could you imagine sleeping here? If it were my bedroom I'm not sure if I'd ever leave!

GET THE LOOK:

1. Harlekin Carpet
2. Large Rattan Chair
3. BOHO cushion cover
4. Black Bench
5. Glass Jar
6. Cushion cover

N.B: Nordal ships throughout Europe (webshop stockists here).

Once again, you can find out more info on the prints and a few other details here - and just give me a shout in the comment section below if you're wondering about anything else!

Have a lovely day!

Favourite Small Touches in My Bedroom Right Now

You may have noticed that my bedroom has been the centre of attention these past few weeks. I reckon deep down it's because I'm preparing for my winter hibernation - and a whole load of reading under those bed covers! Do you find yourself naturally gravitating indoors over the autumn / winter too? I realised today that I've shared a load of info about the larger items in the room - such as the wall colour, as well as the armchair, headboard and bed covers (which reminds me, tomorrow is the last day to claim your 20% discount if you're looking to buy something from Bemz - more info here!), but since the devil is in the detail, I also wanted to share some info about the smaller pieces!

I've had the bedside stool for years - and I have to say, it's one of my favourite pieces. I see they sell similar at the Old Wooden Stool* company. The Ikornnes mirror is from IKEA (I love the ash finish and that you can hang clothes on the rail on the back (maybe I might just hang my clothes up at night for once!).

This beautiful wall light is the Arum wall light* by Danish brand Ferm Living. I love how it's similar to the wall colour yet still stands out due to its form. Do you like it too?

On my bedside table is the pretty Vulca mini vase with grey dots and beside that is the Vulca mini vase agave - leaving just enough space for a coffee / glass of water and a book! Below is the large Vulca Vase* (do you see a pattern forming?). I love the irregularity and texture.

Another new piece: the Motljus print* by Sandra Blomén Machinsky. 'Motljus' means 'backlight' in Swedish. It might make its way up on the wall soon, but for now, I love looking at it from my side of the bed!

Our windowsill doubles up as a ledge for plants and books (and more often than not, a row of coffee cups and glasses!). I've also added the Anse vase* and Anse pot (how cool are the handles?).

Through the window, you can just make out the outline of a building - and beyond that, is the sea. When are neighbours have their curtains open, we can see the sparkling waters through their windows! I'm not sure if an estate agent would classify that as a 'sea view' but we'll take it!

The bedside light is the classic Mantis BS3 table lamp - I've had it for donkeys and never grow tired of it.

Peeking behind the vase is my book The Scandinavian Home - I don't usually surround myself with my own books, I promise!

One of the most asked about items in my bedroom is the pendant light. It's from Paris au mois d'aout. It's also a point of contention as I've had a few comments questioning the size and height over the bed. It works for us, but I guess we're used to it! I love to play with scale and feel that it's important to have at least one thing in a room that's oversized. It adds so much interest.

The bench is from Skovby and under foot is the Tisca Olbia rug (we painted the wood floor in 'Strong White' - from Farrow & Ball, which strangely, is actually a pale shade of grey!).

I think that's everything but if I missed anything please do give me a shout below!

Speaking of which, I'm working to fix commenting issues this week so bear with me if it looks a bit weird / not working in the way you'd like - hopefully it'll be resolved in the next few days.

Har det så bra!
