Before And After: A Dated Georgia House Gets The Scandi Treatment!

Oh, how I love to see before and after shots. I find it so inspiring to get an idea of the complete transformation - and the feeling that anything is possible with a little imagination and hard graft (and depending on the scale, some cash, of course!) - how about you? When my amazingly talented friend Valentina Fussell acquired her home in Georgia, Atlanta it was dated and a sea of beige, beige and more beige. But the moment she and her husband Jack and their three children stepped through the door they were in love. Looking at the bones, I can totally see why! Valentina had the vision to turn the house into a striking, contemporary, light-filled home inspired by their years abroad, including a stint in Copenhagen. You might recall a previous feature of the house here (and a tour of their Danish home here) but I couldn't resist revisiting the space today to share a little more about the transformation and show some of the before pictures. Drumroll, please!

KITCHEN (BEFORE)

AFTER
Valentina and Jack completely gutted the kitchen and decided on dark grey cabinets (from Bell Cabinetry & Design) to add energy and a sense of drama to the space. Dark colours also help to mask appliances.

VALENTINA'S OFFICE (BEFORE)

AFTER
Perhaps the most dramatic room in the house, Valentina's office has been painted entirely in dark grey. the large windows help to bathe the space in light. It reminds me a little of the lovely home of Lotta Agaton - what do you think?

LIVING ROOM (BEFORE)

AFTER
Valentina stuck to her monochromatic scheme and added warmth with details such as books, figurines, photos and plants as well as cushions and blankets. The wood floor is from Authentic Reclaimed Hardwoods and selected due to the imperfect 'alive' nature of the grain which adds texture and a relaxed feel to the monochrome space. I have to say; this room is BEYOND...!!!

JACK'S OFFICE (BEFORE)

AFTER
This bedroom was transformed into Jack's office. A work in progress (although I struggle to see how it can be improved!), the office has been decorated with a black and white scheme with added texture and interest from a large, patterned rugs, art other personal possessions.

MASTER BATHROOM (BEFORE)

AFTER
The master bathroom was the first room in the house to be renovated. The pair opted for a more classic look so it would stand the test of time.

VALENTINA'S DAUGHTER'S ROOM
Valentina's daughter was given free rein to decorate her bedroom. And judging by the results, it seems an eye for design runs in the family! My eldest daughter also loves to personalise her room with pictures - usually ripped out without scissors and haphazardly stuck to the wall using copious amounts of Sellotape! I am feeling particularly inspired by the way the pictures have been displayed in this teenage bedroom! Great inspiration! Thank you!

What an incredible transformation, don't you think?! Valentina is just so clever!!

If you're curious to hear more about the renovations and see more of the home (including 'the catwalk' and amazing conservatory, take a peek at her films here and here

Valentina recently relaunched House of Valentina stateside and helps others buy, sell, renovate and decorate. One day she dreams of opening a shop loaded with all the items used to stage and decorate homes. If she does, I'll be the first in line, how about you?!

See more fabulous 'before and afters'!

Have a lovely day!

A Serene Light Coloured Danish Home

Black, white, grey and cream. These four simple hues are all that's needed in Carla Sofie Molge's serene home in Horsens, Denmark.  To add interest and depth, the freelance interior stylist and CEO of Molge Decor, has worked with form and texture. Think layers of crinkled linen, lace, marble, concrete and cotton as well as delightful sculptural pieces and contemporary design. Scandinavian minimalism at its finest!  Enjoy the tour!

It's been a bit of a hectic week - and this calm space is exactly what I needed today. Thank you Carla!

Have you enjoyed this tour too?

There's something so effortless about Carla's style and it really does prove that sometimes it's best to keep it simple!

A little news from my side. I mentioned yesterday that I was crazily busy with a tight deadline. Today, my The Home Viewings Exhibition has gone live at The Swedish Design Museum! A Beautifully Pared-back Norwegian Hillside Home

I was thinking that it's been way to long since I featured a Norwegian home - and then this beautiful space popped up from nowhere (actually, it wasn't technically from nowhere - it's the fruits of an Avenue Design Studio trip to Norway late last year!). The house is located in Drammen, just south west of Oslo and belongs to design duo Kine and Kristoffer and their son Vilmer. Like their creative studio, the hillside house reflects their passion for sustainability and function as well as their penchant for a clean, Nordic aesthetic and eye for detail. Let's take a peek inside!

Although fairly minimalist the look has a lovely, relaxed feel thanks to the mix and match chairs around a Hay Loop Stand Table.  The light overhead is the Gubi Semi Pendant.

The U-shaped kitchen is a prototype of their own bean stained bamboo kitchen and the open shelving is also from the Ask og Eng collection.

Kine and Kristoffer exercise a lot of restraint when it comes to colour, preferring a neutral, monochrome scheme which draws heavily from nature.

Upstairs the family of three have a second sitting room where they like to relax together.

The pair made the bespoke headboard from bamboo to create a warm and intimate feel in the bedroom. I also love how the reading lights have been hung from a central point in the ceiling.

The bed is covered in the Mega Dot Quilt by Hay.
Vilmer's room has been painted in a gorgeous blue and white colour scheme (although I don't know the exact blue paint colour, it looks similar to the one in my stepson's room (S 7010-R90B Ambience by Nordsjö). My daughter has the same Apple Papple print by Fine Little Day in her room and tells all her secrets to him! Isn't he fab?! She also has the same tent! Source a similar one here

Thank you so much to Kine and Kristine for a virtual tour and to Holly and Hedda from Avenue Design Studio for the kind permission to share these lovely pictures. You can see more / read the full interview here.

What struck me the most about this home, is how beautiful each and every piece of furniture is. In the interview it says that the pair are careful to select items that are built to stand the test of time, and you can totally see this from the pictures.

Is there anything that stands out to you?

For more Norwegian inspiration today don't miss this serene home looking out over a fjord,  this cosy and relaxed cottage and a magical mountain cabin! Gah! So lovely!

My sister's arriving from London tomorrow evening with my 2.5 year old and 6 month old niece in tow, so it's a hive of activity around here in preparation for the royal arrival. We're so excited!!

Have a lovely day!

A Striking Swedish Home With A Wall of Books!

Why, hello there! I hope you had a great weekend?! I'm hoping this home might brighten up the start of your week (it certainly has mine!). This incredible apartment in Stockholm belongs to Anna Tuernell, Head of Design at Arket. It's a home of contrast - where light wood floors and fresh white walls juxtapose with dark grey, black and wood furniture. But perhaps my favourite thing of all are the floor to ceiling shelves brimming with books - if you're a book lover, you'll no doubt fall in love with it too! Anna invited Lotta Agaton and Kristofer Johnsson in to capture it for Residence magazine. Enjoy the tour!

The bumling pendant (call me immature but I can't help smile at the name, how about you?!) in brass definitely takes centre stage in the kitchen. There are always second-hand ones available here.

The sitting room reads like a 'who's who' of fabulous design classics - with the most unbelievably comfortable Eames lounge chair and ottoman beside a Bollo Lounge chair.

Book lovers rejoice! I've said it already in the introduction, but just how wonderful are these floor to ceiling shelves bursting with books?! The Elfa bookshelf system is perfect for creating this effect.

The tea trolley - possibly my favourite piece by Artek (and the black version too, love it!) looks great next to the Panthella Floor lamp.

A Swedish Kakelugn in the corner of the bedroom adds a decorative touch (and if in working condition - a lot of warmth!) to the bedroom. An Eames rocker can be seen just in front (ready to act as the perfect chairdrobe?).

What a fabulous space?! The architect is simply stunning too. Imagine having ceilings as high as this?!

Thank you so much to Lotta for the kind permission to share these lovely photos from her portfolio  - and to Coco Lapine - through whom I discovered this space!

You can see more of Lottas lovely work here

Have a happy start to the week all!
