For The Love of Rugs: Three Favourite Looks From Domotex 2019

It's amazing what a difference flooring can make to a home - whether you go for tiles, wood, concrete, wall-to-wall carpets (word on the street - or should I say feet - that these are starting to make a come back in Denmark!) - a space can be completely transformed in an instant. Needless to say, choosing what to go for can be so daunting! We definitely don't have enough rugs in our home (for this very reason) and in my mind, rugs / carpets are what make a home ultra snuggly - do you feel the same? This was top of my mind when I visited Domotex - the leading fair for flooring coverings - in Hanover last weekend. The theme was Create N Connect - and there was just so much to see! I couldn't resist a peek around the wood floor and tile halls, but my mind was on the carpets  - and there were three looks that stole my heart!

1. Timeless Contemporary
Located in the quadrangle formed by Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Liechtenstein, Tisca cultivate super cosy, unique hand-woven rugs. Their skilful weavers fashion treasures out of beautiful, hard-wearing textiles which are designed to last. I'm loving the extra chunk Olbia Campo rug below!

2. Modern Boho
For pretty rugs with warm colours, plenty of pattern. and a bohemian edge, Edelgrund is totally on point! Their stand had a souk like feel, showcasing their tribal carpets made in the homes of weavers in Iran. Each of Edelgrund's patterned kilim rugs are Fair Trade and tell an individual story.

3. Natural Toasty
I spent a disproportionate amount of time eating chocolate with Austrian based company Natur Pur. The small, family-run business creates a range of luxury hand-knotted rugs made from natural undyed wool for an extra toasty feel!

Aren't they beautiful?! Do you have a favourite?

Coral Garden
I'd like also like to do a special shout out to Vanessa Barragäo, who handcrafted the stunning Coral Garden. A notice next to the artwork read: "Global warming and pollution are destroying one of the world's most vital environments, the coral reefs, which are the heart of marine life's bio diversity." Vanessa used recycled materials to create the coral reef (which fades out from a healthy reef to the left and dying reef to the left) to raise awareness of up cycling and environmentally conscious production. Beautiful and so important!

My Tribe!
And last but not least: my tribe! It was so fun catching up and taking part in two panel discussions with my favourite blogger gang including (from left to right below) The Ruggist, Happy Interior, Monster Circus, Decor8 (the creative behind the stand seen in the first image), Camilla BelliniVosgesparis,  Passion Shake, (Me!), and Trend Stefan seen here on the stand of Jaipur Rugs. And a special thanks to Lars Rogall from Domotex for inviting us!

Tile style: Three Living Rooms, Three Different Vibes

Considering floor tiles for your living space? My sister's Goldendoodle (google 'Goldendoodle puppies' and your heart will positively melt) put paid to their wooden floor. So, in their recent renovation they opted for tiles instead. Growing up in a home with wooden floors and wall-to-wall carpets, tiles are a bit of a new area for me. So, for fun, I decided to experiment with three tiles from the Gemini Tiles floor tile collection available through CTD Tiles to create three different living room vibes. The brand offers an extensive collection of handpicked wall and floor tiles which take inspiration from both traditional and contemporary styles so there were a whole load to choose from! In the end I opted for the Cuban Black Block tile, Buxy Gris floor Tile and Cuban Silver Sky tile. I can't wait to hear which one you like the most!

Be still my beating heart! How fabulous is this Cuban Black Block Tile? Inspired by traditional hot wax paintings, the tile comes in size 223 x 223 mm and is made from glazed porcelain with a matt finish. The intricate geometric look instantly took me back to an elegant, eclectic contemporary Parisian hotel I stayed at last November. Think gold, luxurious velvet in deep earthy blues and emerald greens and the infinite depth and nobility of black marble.  I might just be willing to forgo my pattern shyness and go all out in my own home with this one - how about you?

Get the look:

1. Vitra Suita Sofa Designers Choice
2. Twice Ceiling Light
3. The Lily Candleholder
4. Ferm Living Marble Table Black
5. Gubi Bat Lounge Chair High Back
6. Embroidered Velvet Star Cushion
7. Boule Vase
8. North Shelf
9. & Tradition FLY Chair SC1 Smoked Oak
10. Gubi BestLite BL1 Table Lamp Brass
11. Fishbowl Vase

If the industrial look is more your thing - I picked the Buxy Gris floor tile for its cool, contemporary urban style. Think New York loft living meets Scandi minimalism! The grey porcelain floor tile comes in 600 x 600 mm and a 600 x 300 mm size and looks pretty fabulous with a cognac, grey, white and black palette. Throw in furniture made from cool metals, wood, leather and wool to bring natural warmth to the space. I love the fresh, earthy look of this style, and it's timeless too! Could you imagine incorporating this look into your home?

Get the look:

1. Tribeca Series Franklin Chandelier
2. Anderssen & Voll strip back the sofa
3. The Art of Fabric Print 3
4. Vitra Eames Hang It All - Walnut & Chocolate
5. Lína Swivel Chair
6. Metal Candlestick
7. The MANTIS - DCW BS5 SW Wall Lamp
8. Carl Hansen CH28 Chair
9. Magis Lem Round Table

And last, but by no means less - if you love to rock a boho look, you might be drawn to this fresh yet cosy contemporary Mallorcan finca vibe. Inspired by traditional encaustic tiles, I feel the subtle colour palette and intricate pattern of the glazed porcelain Cuban Silver Sky tile in size 223 x 223 mm gives a space a lovely, cool look and feel. I love the idea of pairing it with beautiful natural wood finishes, rattan furniture, glass, brass and linen to add character while keeping the look calm, and cosy yet bang up to date. If you don't want to go all out, this is the type of tile which would also look pretty in the hallway or bathroom, don't you think?!

Get the look:

1. Gervasoni Ghost Sofa
2. Dutchbone Brute Side Table Aluminium
3. Binga basket
4. NORR11 Nomad Lounge Chair Bamboo Cognac Leather
7. Colton Coffee Table
8. Large Glass Vase
9. Genuine Moroccan Ottoman
10. Silk Cashmere White Cover Lamp
11. Round Metal Tray

Did you have a favourite style?

I could quite easily envisage all three in my home but if I had to pick just one I'd go for the third.  Perhaps that's just because the sun is slowly fading in Sweden and I'm pining after the med! Plus I've always loved pretty patterned tiles!

6 Ways to Rock the Rug in 2018

Tjena, hur är läget?! Is there something you feel you're always lacking in your home? For me, it's rugs! I just never seem to have enough of them. But after my visit to DOMOTEX (the leading trade fair for floor coverings) last weekend, I feel inspired to make it a whole lot more cosy around here. The stands were teeming with the most incredible floor coverings. Think beautiful art, super tactile textures (handwoven, wool and silk mix anyone?) and an abundance of colour. Fellow bloggers - Holly from Decor8, Igor from Happy Interiors blog and Urban Jungle Bloggers, Agata from Passion Shake, Stefan from Trend Stefan, Desiree from Vogesparis and Mette from Monsterscircus and I took to the stage to discuss the latest trends to rock the rug world in 2018.

Here's the low down (get it?!)...

1. Traditional, beautifully handcrafted rugs with a contemporary touch

2. Show stopper rugs that steal the spotlight (to rock the look keep the rest of the room relatively minimalist and calm, picking out one or two key colours only).

3. Rugs that break the mould - think outside the box and go for unusual shaped rugs to make a feature!

4. It's all in the layers: the perfectly imperfect look where rugs in different colours, patterns and textures overlap to max out the cosiness.

El Ramla Hamra (check out their beautiful Etsy shop here).

5. Vintage / hard wearing: think sustainable and opt for second hand or invest in a hardwearing piece that will stand the test of time and can be enjoyed by generations to come.

6. Some rugs are just way too spectacular to be walked on - which is why I'm loving the idea of hanging on them on the wall. Think 'super-size' macrame wall hangings (add a little texture and colour too) rug art or simple carpets in off-whites.

The good news? This definitely leaves scope for all our beloved Moroccan rugs  - I'm loving colourful Berber rugs and Kilims in particular.  Is there any trend you love the idea of?

If so perhaps these rugs I spotted might help...

Mariantonia Urru
Driven by a strong passion for the vast variety of weaving techniques and traditional motifs, Mariantonia Urru, is based in Samugheo and creates pieces using common traditional methods, such as pibiones and litzos, as well as rediscovering old techniques like un in dente and aramu.

I put the cushions to the test (for a while...) and yep, they're as comfortable as they look! I see they're available here (just saying....).

I'd have stayed there all day, had there not been a blogger tour to attend to and other stands to visit such as...

Rug Star

Rug Star's founder Jürgen Dahlmanns told us about how his award winning rug company combine his two abiding passions: Tibetan rugs and contemporary design.
Rug Star
DOMOTEX

Hossein Rezvani

Quite possibly the most tactile rugs I've ever encountered, Hossein Rezvani is the only brand to offer contemporary rugs made in Isfhan, Iran with up to 1 million knots per square metre!

Despite looking like we're listening, Igor, myself and Stefan (from l to r) were actually dreaming about kicking off our shoes and walking around on these beauties bare foot!

Tisca Rugs

If you saw my post the other day, you'll know I'm already a big fan of Tisca rugs. Not only do they look lush, Tisca's unique hand-woven rugs are hard-wearing, durable and reversible.  I so need one of these in my life!

Picture: TISCA AUSTRIA
Aaaaah. so beautiful. The questions is, do I go subtle or bold? I think you know the answer to that one! Did anything catch your eye?

Before I head off  I'd like to say a huge thanks to the team at DOMOTEX (Timo and Lars I'm looking at you!) for a wonderful time and also to Holly Becker for an amazing job presenting and moderating our panel discussions and taking us on a fab tour of the fair and Hannover (what a great city! see Agata's guide here).

Have a great start to the week!

Rug (and neturals) heaven at DOMOTEX

Hej hej! How's your January? I've been a little too busy to let the gloomy weather get to me (Malmö - where's the snow, though?!), I hope you have too?! I kicked off the working year with an inspiring trip to Hannover for DOMOTEX - the leading B2B trade fair for floor coverings. I've got a real weakness for rugs and wood flooring so I was in absolute heaven and so happy to team up with some of my favourite bloggers including Holly from Decor8, Igor from Happy Interiors blog and Urban Jungle Bloggers, Agata from Passion Shake, Stefan from Trend Stefan, Desiree from Vogesparis and Mette from Monsterscircus to tour the fair and take part in two panel discussions (more to follow later this week). There were so many incredible brands at the fair. One of the highlights for me, was the TISCA stand. TISCA produce unique hand-woven rugs, and teamed up with Lotta Agaton Interiors from Sweden (it was so great to meet Lotta and Pella Hedeby in person - look out for links to these lovely ladies' homes below - they're totally worth a peek!). The stand was designed using milky tones and furniture from Team 7, Vitra and Artek - and of course some of TISCA's beautiful rugs! I took a few snaps to share with you...

One of the key rug trends this year is adorning walls with rugs (as art or simply to give the room a soft, cosy feel) and the TISCA stand demonstrated this beautifully. Love, love, loved it!

And how soothing are those neutral tones?

Look out for a full report on DOMOTEX later this week.

Oh, and I promised to share the links to Lotta Agaton's home (Lotta was the founder of one my favourite magazines Residence) and Pella Hedeby's home.

Have a lovely day!

PS Another of my favourite magazines Condé Nast Traveler, featured my Lagom Book yesterday (I did an actual body roll when I saw the piece - thank you!).

We'll also be taking a guided tour of DOMOTEX to visit some of the stands.  Yay! I can't wait!

Getting creative with BOEN hardwood flooring!

If there's one thing synonymous with a Scandinavian home it's wood flooring, right?! And in a region where beautiful forests reign supreme, the Scandinavians are never short of high quality wood! I was recently approached by BOEN, a Norwegian brand selling hardwood flooring in over 40 countries around the world (you can say they're pretty big!). BOEN has collaborated with my talented friend, trends expert Gudy Herder to launch three new beautiful collections this Autumn around the themes; Essential, Drama is the new Black and Pause. The Pause lifestyle trend is all about relaxation and the instinctive need to slow down (I'm feeling more relaxed just hearing about it, how about you?!). As a part of this, BOEN has produced three new oak wood floors which exude calm thanks to their neutral grey shades (mild grey, warm cotton and horizon) and smooth Live Pure finish. The My Scandinavian Home team had a relaxing day (sort of!)  in the studio -  creating a moodboard to reflect this beautiful theme. Here's our take on the Pause trend!

Back in a couple of hours time with today's home tour (a beautiful, boho Danish apartment - yay!)....
See you then!

In the meantime, take it easy!

Lovely black floors in the home of a French stylist

I can't seem to get enough of black floors right now. While the previous home had high-gloss black painted floors, this wonderful French home has matt stained floors for a rougher texture. French stylist Anne-Fleur Broudehoux, one half of Roseanna, immediately fell in love with this former shop in a hidden courtyard in Paris and has turned it into a wonderful home. It's teeming with vintage and second-hand finds and beautiful Morroccoan rugs which pop against the black backdrop. Are you tempted yet?!

Louise Desrosiers. Shared with kind permission from Milk Magazine.

What a lovely relaxed home, don't you think?

I love the clever built-in headboard which brings the bed away from the wall to create extra space for shelving. The open shelves make a really personal feature and add a little cosiness to the room.

Find a similar array of rugs at Beldi (I once featured Beldi's owner Tamsin Flower's cheerful home - which is full of lovely Boucherouite and Azilal rugs - perfect inspiration!

Is there anything that stands out to you?

Other beautiful French homes to admire today include Elodie's Bordeaux townhouse and the home of a French fashion designer.  Oh la la!

Have a wonderful day!

PS If you're stuck in the office today - close your eyes for a minute and dream you're a million miles away on this swing. Did it do the trick?!
