Gen's Playful Swedish Summer Cottage

Only three weeks to go until midsummer and Swedes are counting down the days until they lock up their city homes and head out to the country to relax! My dear friend Genevieve Jorn will be spending her last summer with her family at her summer cottage in Almåsa, just outside Malmö - as they have decided to put it on the market. 

An interior designer and creative director at Farniente Beach Club, Gen has added her signature style with pops of colour and pattern throughout the little 40 metres square (430 foot square) cottage - giving the space a fun and playful touch, while the predominance of white, natural materials and wood panelling ensures it remains somewhere you can come to relax and kick back for the weekend or entire summer.

It must be with a very heavy heart that Gen has decided to sell up - but I am looking forward to seeing what she does next.

A Danish Cabin That's All About The Hygge!

Once upon a time I shared a lovely apartment belonging to Sarah Bjørumslet. The title of the post read 'keeping it real in a Danish family home in the heart of Copenhagen'. And I still remember how refreshing I thought it was to see an unstaged home complete with milk cartons on the table and toys strewn across the bedroom floor. Hooray to everyday life! 

I've been following Sarah's instagram feed @look_good_in_blue ever since and was excited to see that her 'cosy, old school' cottage is available to rent this summer! Situated between Rørvig and Nykøbing North West of Copenhagen, the cabin was built in the 1950s as an artists atelier, before becoming a relaxed getaway by the sea. Read on to discover more! 

Sarah says it's full of games and DVDs - a perfect way to wind down, especially if the Danish weather isn't playing ball! 

Mismatched crockery and glassware adds to the laidback vibe of the cabin and a glass cabinet keeps everything at hand! 

The cosy kitchen is leaning towards the cottage core vibe we are seeing so much of right now and reminds me a little of Hannes Mauritzen's little Swedish allotment cottage (if you haven't seen the tour, head on over!).  

I'm guessing the big chest is full of toys - or maybe blankets! What do you think? 

The sofa pulls out into a bed for extra guests - essential in a Scandinavian summer house as friends and family often stop by for a night or two (always bringing their own bedding, as is customary). 

I love how books are never far away - perfect for a rainy day! 

The ethos of the Scandinavian summer is to spend as much time outdoors as possible. Here, a little play house has been set up for children, and simple outdoor furniture serves as a spot to sit around the fire. After all, it wouldn't be Danish without the hygge! 

Guests don't need to wander far to reach the most magnificent sand dunes and beaches! I personally, love that part of the world - so beautiful!

A Timber Swedish Cabin Surrounded by Woodland

What are your plans for the weekend? 

Having lived a separate week in their own apartments in Stockholm, Sofia and Mattias will no doubt reconvene here with their respective children to spend the weekend together. 

Made up of a series of separate cabins (built by Enkelrum) each with their own living quarters, the property provides plenty of space for their large family to gather and get away from it all, surrounded by beautiful nature. Sofia and Mattias also have the flexibility to work from home, and the separate dwellings mean they have the opportunity to carve out some privacy should the situation require. 

But most of all, it'a a place where the family come to relax - with the light green kitchen and simple timber interior reflecting the forest and countryside that surrounds them.

An Eco Retreat Stay in the Forests of Sweden

Dreaming of an escape today? Allow me to whisk you away to depths of the Swedish forests, and this fairytale getaway! Nestled by a lake in the southern Sweden wilderness, Urnatur, meaning 'primeval nature' is the brainchild of forester Håkan Strotz and forest biologist and edible plants expert Ulrika Krynitz. The pair are passionate about ethnobiology and the interaction between man and nature and wanted others to experience an eco-retreat where you can get away from it all and go back-to-basics. 

Made up of an off-the-grid treehouse and a series of cabins built by Håkan and decorated by Ulrika, Urnatur invites guests to stay on Sjögetorp and Renemo farms and make the most of everything the surrounding nature has to offer. Sleep in the trees or snuggle up in a cosy log cabin before taking to the lake in a kayak, foraging for berries and other delicacies or cooking supper over an open fire. You might also want to explore the farm shop for lovely local wares too! 

It does look wonderful, I have to say - and a far cry from my studio in Malmö where I am tapping away at my laptop today.
