The Soot House: A Beautiful Cabin Inspired By Rugged Landscape

What do you get if you combine a sculptor with a builder? The Soot House, that's what! Sculptor turned builder Anthony Esteves built the Soot House by hand, combining his learnings as a sculptor with newly acquired high-end building techniques. The charred black structure was inspired by the 'ghostly quality' of 17th century New England homes and the wild, craggy landscape of Spruce Head, Maine. Today Anthony, his wife Julie O'Rourke (founder of RudyJude kids clothes) enjoy the house and it's beautiful surroundings first hand.

I've always been such a big fan of black houses. They're fairly common in Scandinavia (especially for summer houses / cabins). For this charred black structure, Anthony was inspired by the island's black spruce and lichens as well as the wild landscape.

The table (which was picked up at a local secondhand shop) is so beautiful, don't you think? My Mother has a similar one which she bought at auction years ago- sadly the drawers mean that it's too low to fit a chair / your legs under the table (just a word of warning to measure up before you acquire one of these bad boys!). She uses hers as a side table, and it looks equally beautiful!

I love how the textures - such as stone and wood - have been carefully selected to mirror the craggy surrounding landscape.

A small stove resting on a vintage chest-of-drawers serves as somewhere to cook evening meals (in a back-to-basics kinda way!).

Rails made from copper pipes and ropes are used as clothes hangers in the bedroom.

Wow! So striking, personal and unique! You can really sense the connection that the house has with its surroundings.

The interior would look equally at home on the rugged Swedish Baltic island of Gotland.

And the exterior reminds me a lot of this incredible black house by the sea in rural Iceland which I'm totally planning on renting one day!

Are you a fan of black facades too?

A white and grey Swedish home with touches of Christmas

A few weeks ago I showed the lovely apartment of Swedish interior designer Elin Kickén which was for sale through interior stylists and estate agents Västanhem. Now I've spotted this charming Swedish apartment in Jönköping is for sale on the site too. The space is decorated in white and grey but I think it's the rugs and subtle Christmas decorations and candles which give it the warmth.

Västanhem

Rugs and lights are the two things I don't have enough of in my home. An investment for 2014? Are you missing in your home?

On Friday it's my birthday - yay! I already cheated and celebrated a little last weekend with a night in Copenhagen with my man, sister and her fiancé - we went to Höst (such a beautiful restaurant!) and I can tell you the food is fantastic too) and Bibendum (still recovering!). Yesterday I also got an early birthday present from my Uncle - a Tom Dixon candle holder in copper. I feel like one very lucky and spoilt lady this week!

What's on your wish list?

The beautiful apartment of a Swedish interior designer

Hej du! I'm blogging from further up the coast today in Höganäs (home to Lily & Oscar (remember this beautiful cottage?) and Magasin 36 which I fully intend on visiting!). But before I do I had to share this incredible home with you which is currently for sale. It's owned by Swedish interior designer Elin Kickén (and I've heard Instagram extroadinaire (@elinkicken) and teeming with fabulous pieces. Take a peek....

Elin Kicken, Vastenhem via Husligheter and Stil Inspiration with thanks.

Have a lovely day and happy halloween Mwah, ha ha haaaa!

Perfect blend: rustic/ industrial/ contemporary

After 8 years in Sweden I thought I knew how to deal with the long winter; leave the country when the snow arrives! If you travel to the Canary Islands or Thailand around early spring you're bound to be surrounded by tanned Swedes stocking up on some much needed sun! But this Autumn I noticed something new-  everyone's heading off now too. A holiday in September presumably to soften the blow of the end of the summer. Since I have missed the boat (litereally) I'm mentally transporting myself  to this stunning home in Spain by architects / property developers Abaton (via 79 ideas) instead. It has just the right mix of Spanish rustic, industrial and modern designer elements to really soften the blow of the impending winter.

I spy Tom Dixon again in the form of the Beat Lights (just goes tp show how versatile Tom Dixon lights are - yesterday the Copper Shade Pendant looked at home in a retro style home, today the Beat Lights look fab in a contemporary minimalist home. The Wegner Wishbone Chairs also blend in beautifully. I could certainly see myself celebrating the end of summer here, could you?

Do you have any winter survival tips?!

A quirky Dutch home with fab colours (and lots of art)

While looking for new hallway storage ideas (squirrelled away here), I stumbled across an old favourite (see the entrance way below) - what's not to love about the pink wall, copper pipe and illustrations?! After a little research (including an e-mail to the photographer Hans Mossel) I was excited to discover the entire home and had to share it with you. Situated in Holland, the space is full of fab colours, art, and quirky treasures. What a fascinating home...

Photography: Hans Mossel, shared with kind permission. Stylist: Sabine Burkunk.

Incredible - I've looked through these images several times and every time I spot something new! How about you? I'm so looking forward to hearing your thoughts...

Similar paint colours include Ground pink, Arsenic and Down Pipe.

More wonderful Dutch homes here (scroll passed the first one as it will be this home).

I'm on my way to Copenhagen for a few meetings, I hope I'll have time to pop into a few of my favourite shops...and squeeze in a lunch date too. Today is going to be a good day, I can feel it!

I hope you have some great plans too?

One more thing - I love this sneak peek inside Tine's modernist bungalow in Belgium. Many of the items you see can be found in their shop 'Design Collectors', selling fabulous items by Vitra, Artek and Thonet. Even better news - Design Collectors is offering all My Scandinavian Home readers 15% discount with code MYSCAN. I've got my eye on the tea trolley, 214 chair and the DCW....

Have a lovely day!

A fabulous home in a former garage

I hope you've had a lovely few days? I'm having a great time in London and looking forward to some down time today with my girls before heading back to Sweden on Wednesday. How about you? Doesn't this time of year fill you with the need to bring colour into the home? I'm really feeling the yellows, blues, greens and pinks! This converted garage space featured in the February edition of Elle Decoration UK (I've just bought the May edition and it's fab) found via one of my all time favourite blogs SF Girl By Bay is so wonderful it makes my spring heart sing!

Jean-Marc Wullschleger for Elle Decoration UK

There's such a personal stamp to this incredible home. I'm loving the Tom Dixon copper shade lamps customised with neon pink chords, fantastic wood burning stoves and the black rug with the large floral print. How about you?

What a cool home!

For more colour inspiration I love this brightly coloured Dutch home, this stunning vintage inspired home of a Melbourne illustrator, and a lovely Skåne home with pops of green.

Have a wonderful day!
