A tour of my kitchen!

Why, hello there! I hope you've had a great weekend? I've been thinking back to May when a team from GRUNDIG K!TCHN Mag paid me a visit here in Malmö, Southern Sweden. We spent the day taking snapshots of my kitchen and dining area and chatting about how I designed the space. I'm super excited to see the film live on Kitchen Stories (alongside Norm Architects no less - eeeeee!).  Before you watch the film - I have a couple of things to confess. Firstly, I actually had a cast on my leg at the time (it was filmed a couple of weeks after I'd ruptured my achilles heel!) so it's carefully stationed behind the kitchen island. This is also why they filmed me walking in slow motion (it was more of a hobble in real life!).... oh the things that can be done with a little clever film work! Secondly, my kitchen did not look like this when I left this morning! For now, though, I'll be dreaming that it's this spotless ..... (maybe it'll inspire me to give it a once over when I get home!). I hope you enjoy these snapshots and the film of the 'engine room' of our house!

A quick note on where everything's from (if I've missed anything just give me a shout in the comment section below):

Dining area: the bench is from Lovely & Co, source a Gotland sheepskin here, the chairs were a flea market find and painted white, the large cushion and oil lamp are both Nordal.
Window nook: Söderhamn daybed. The lamp and patterned cushion are from Nordal, these linen cushions are similar. My book The Scandinavian Home: Interiors inspired by light.
Drinks trolley: barcart, vases and candlestick holder all Nordal.  Muuto E27 light, The Kate Moss Book.
Kitchen: cabinets from Marbodal, oak surface, chopping boards from Nordal and Granit, L:A Bruket hand & body soap. Kitchen island from IKEA, stools, hooks and feather duster from Geijersgatan 53, ceramic hanging planters by Anne Black. Rug from IKEA.

I'm so curious to hear what you think?!

Is there anything you love about your kitchen and recommend we do in our own? (Go on, inspire us - it's Monday, we need it!).

Have a great start to the week!

  3. A job very well done, Niki. Lovely space. If over time, you would consider adding even more personality, I would personally replace the daybed and the rug by a camp bed from the amazing Greek (!) brand Topos (http://www.toposworkshop.com/toposworkshop-ww2/)and a rug from the equally amazing Spanish brand Nani Marquina. Her Natural collection is simply stunning. I think both would be a great fit :-)

  5. Love it! Only slight criticism is that the rug looks a trip hazard. Saying this because I have one similar and have to put something heavy on it from time to time to keep it down. Really really like the bench with sheepskin

    1. Interestingly none of us have tripped yet but perhaps we should do something about it...thanks for pointing out! You say something heavy, does that work? I wonder if there are any other tricks?

  10. Hi

    Beautiful! What are the floors?

    1. They are oak laminate. When we moved in they were really dark (mat) and we sanded them down and white-washed them - they became a lovely light grey colour with a hint of the wood grain showing through. Very pleased with it!

    2. That's great. I had no idea you could do that with laminate. Love them.

    3. Many wood floors are laminate, in this instant the top layering is oak which is great as it's very hard wearing and has a beautiful grain. :)

  16. Love it so much! I totally relate to the minimalist with natural elements (though I have a little boho thrown in sometimes). That is what my house is slowly working its way to but I am being picky with the final touches. Also love the fig tree on the table. I really want one too but I am scared it won't get enough light and will be sad. Have you had luck with it?

    1. Thank you Joan! Honestly - I'm a bit hopeless with fig trees! Apparently some varieties drop their leaves at certain times of the year and can appear dead though? Let's hope this one lasts!

and that bench nook is everything. Your finishes are gorgeous but I also really like the length and layout of the room. It feels spacious but still friendly.xo

  20. Gorgeous space and design, swoon! May I ask what shade/paint you used for your walls? I'm looking to repaint our walls white, but I had no idea there were THAT MANY shades! Your walls don't look too "blue" or "cream", but just the perfect shade of crisp. We live in the PNW in the US, so it's gray and cloudy a lot here. I'm thinking a nice backdrop of white will happily brighten up our home. Thanks for any insight, and speedy recovery to you too!

    1. Hi Genevieve - thank you! There are indeed so many shades of white it's baffling! Sadly I can't remember which shade we went for but I do know it was a very basic, matt finish pure white! Sorry, not so helpful!

  22. Gorgeus space! I'm so impressed how bright and natural it is. The final result is totally amazing :)
Dear Niki please tell whether the top and bottom cabinets are the same height? And also is the surface of the fronts matt?

  23. I never realized that e the cabinets in the kitchen extend in an uninterrupted line to the dining nook. That's a mean amount of storage! I also enjoyed watching the film and listening to you talking. We don't get to see you often on MSC, let alone live!
I thought about the round black & white tray (with the triangles) this past Monday when I was at Ikea - I thought why can't they make one just like Niki's?
    :-)

    1. Yes - our house has SO much storage it's great but also means we can store a lot of stuff we don't need - so there's a downside too!! So funny about the tray - we got it as a present about ten years ago, I think they bought it at Design Torget. Happy to hear you liked the film! X
