A beautiful, elegant small space apartment in Stockholm

In Stockholm, Sweden, apartments are known for being a bit of a squash and a squeeze. But when you're as skilled as the Swedes at creating beautiful light-filled homes in a limited space it's never a problem! The key, it seems, is a coherent colour sceheme throughout, an open plan design and fabulous windows as room dividers.  This 45 metres square (484 square feet) in the lovely district of Östermalm has all of this and more! How inspiring?!

The way the bedroom has been incorporated into the space is fantastic! For privacy and to cosy it up a little you could add some curtains to pull across at night.

I absolutely love the grey, cognac and wine colour scheme, it's so elegant!

You might be wondering about clothes storage etc. (I was!) and after a quick look a the floor plan I see it's all in the spacious hallway.  Perfect!

Is there anything in particular you appreciate about this space?

Steal the look from this Stockholm apartment: sitting room - EOS pendant light by VITA Copenhagen, try The Poster Club for similar prints, By Lassen Kubus candleholder. Bedroom - linen bed set

Interestingly, whenever I feature a home in shades of grey I inevitably receive a few comments requesting more colour. What are your thoughts - is this look for you? Do you have a favourite colour in your home? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Have a wonderful day!

PS  I'm on the hunt for homes with pops of colour and pattern to feature this week - submissions welcome!

  1. I see only one big NO for me in this space: as a big fan of drinking coffee and/or reading in bed, I'd never hang those pictures so low on the bedroom wall. But that's the only thing :)

    1. I'm with you - drinking coffee and reading in bed has to take priority no.1! Otherwise the space is perfect!

  2. I love how the Swedish people use limited light and the colors white and gray to make the best spaces. Spaces that are light, airy and really functional. A pop of color is nice at times but if you have lived or traveled there in the colder months, some of the apartments look like a dream with the white or off white walls, candles and accent pieces just setting the right tone. I hope the Swedes never fully move towards the colonial time period of dark colored rooms.

  4. Dear Niki!

First thing first, I'd like to thank you so much for that awesome source where I can draw my inspiration :)
I am so obsessed with that flat, since now I am in the process of making overhaul at my newly built apartment. Flat area is exactly the same (45 sq.m) and I just have a couple questions:

    1. Floor covering - wood or linoleum?
    2. What kind of construction / partition of metal and glass between rooms and bedroom is that? How does it called?
    3. If you still have a floor plan for this amazing flat I'd love to take a look at it. For now I have bare walls at my app and I have the opportunity for the most convinient "layout"

    Thanks and warmly,
    Anastasia
